The full name for the piccolo is "flauto piccolo", an Italian name which
means "small flute". The piccolo was invented in the eighteenth century and became used shortly
thereafter. It is an octave higher than the flute. That, along with the size is perhaps the only difference between a piccolo and a flute. In fact, they are help in much the same way. Beethoven was the first composer to utilize the piccolo is "Symphony #5".
