The Guitar (photo) (audio)
The modern form of the guitar was invented during the sixteenth century by Vicente Espinel. Most
guitars have flat backs, though some have been made with curved backs. Most people used the flat-backed guitar. Most backs and sides of guitars are made of maple. The fingerboards are usually made of beech or ebony. The fronts of guitars are made of fir or pine.
While today guitars have six strings, older guitars had up to twelve strings. Today, the concert guitar has three strings made of gut and three are made of wire or silk. Ordinary guitars have strings made of metal and/or plastic. The strings are tuned in ascending intervals of three fourths, a major third, and another fourth. Guitars produce sounds by plucking the strings with the finger or with a guitar pick.
