xylophone was simply a pair of bars laid across the player's legs. Today's orchestral xylophone has two rows of bars arranged like piano keys. Xylophonelike instruments with metal bars include the glockenspiel and vibraharp.

Xylophones had developed in Southeast Asia in the 14th century. The Xylophone was a prominent instrument in African music. And subsquently African slaves introduced the instrument to Latin America. The xylophone was introduced to Europe around 1500. Its first orchestral use was in 1874 by French composer Camille Saint-Saens in his Danse Macabre.
