Musical instrument consisting of one or two tautly stretched membranes
across a bowl-shaped or tubular frame and is held
in place with with nails,
glue, buttons, pegs, laces, or a cord wrapped around the border of skin that
overlaps the shell. The frames or shells are commonly made of wood, metal, or pottery.
The membrane is usually made of animal skin or plastic. Drums are sounded by beating
the instrument with hands or sticks.
Drums are found throughout history,
in all parts of the world, in
practically every culture. Drums are known to have existed since at least
6000 BC. The musical use of drums varies include everything from simple
timekeeping to the carrying of complex rhythms and counterrhythms.
In many cultures they carry strong ceremonial, sacred, or symbolic
associations. In addition, drums are frequently used for signaling and
communication.
