the term "musical instrument" refers to all instruments in general. All instruments can be placed into a family separated into these following categories: aerophones, or wind instruments; chordophones, or stringed instruments; membranophones, or drums; idiophones, or percussion instruments other than drums; and electrophones, or electronic instruments. Most keyboard-type instruments, however have been classified in the general term "musical instrument". Although sometimes classified under stringed instruments, the piano, clavichord and harpsichord will be discussed here.
