The English Horn (photo) (audio)
The English horn is a double-reed instrument. It is a
fifth below the oboe in terms of pitch. Preliminary types of the instrument was first created in the sixteenth century and
was first used conventionally by the seventeenth century English composer Henry Purcell. It is possible that the resemblance of the English horn to that of the English hunting horn dubbed it the nickname "coranglais" which means "horn". Characterized by a curved metal crook and the bulb-shaped horn, the instrument produces a low pitched sound. The bell or bulb-shaped horn is said to create a unique focused and amplified sound.
