Instruments: Cornet
The Cornet (photo) (audio)
A valved instrument, the cornet is very similar to the trumpet. Cornets are pitched in B flat. Cornets, however, have a larger, more
deeper mouthpiece, thereby producing a deeper more rich sound than a trumpet. Unlike the trumpet, which was invented in antiquity and was evolved from a valveless instrument, the cornet was produced first in the 18th century and was valved.
During the nineteenth
century, cornets were used mostly in brass bands. Symphonic use of cornets was introduced by French composers. At the time, trumpets did not have valves so the cornet was used for an instrument with greater agility.
