Applications

Geology is one of the most applied of all sciences. Because of the nature of its subject, the Earth, it provides an understanding of the distribution and quality of all of our natural resources from coal and other minerals to water flowing either on or beneath the Earth's surface.

Mining
An entire subdicipline within geology is devoted to the study of the development and distribution within the Earth's strata of industrial and precious mineral resources. Using the techniques of Tectonics, stratigraphy ( the study of the nature, geometry, and composition of sandstones and shales ), and Mineralogy geologists can predict the location and best method of extraction for mineral resources.

Geologic Engineering
The most visible application of geologic principles and discoveries is in the construction and development industries. Every major construction project is dependent on an understanding of the geologic conditions surrounding its site. Using the stress / strain ellipsoids of structural geology and the techniques of soil and base rock analysis, geologists work with engineers to assure the structural integrity of everything from bridges to skyscrapers.

Petroleum Exploration and Production
No industry is more dependent on a detailed understanding of the geologic history of the Earth than the petroleum industry. Geologists use all of the techniques and principles of structural, stratigraphic, historical, and mineralogical diciplines to reconstruct the geologic development of a province and thereby predict the most likely locations for the occurence of hydrocarbons.

Explore for Oil
Simply put, hydrocarbons ( Oil and Gas ) are most likely to be found:

Use these clues while examining the data from the already drilled wells lettered A-D. Put all of this information together, and decide where to drill the next well for the best chance of a gusher. Choose your drilling location from the sites numbered 1-5.

You will receive appropriate points for each choice.
