I think the Mona Lisa was a painting of just a commonm drifter that Leonardo thought would make a good portrait it is possible for the drifter wanting to remain unknown so Leonardo gave the painting the name Mona Lisa..Thats just one theory the other is this could be a painting of what his daughter would look like if he had a child...

I discovered your site through the Educators' Network and I was amazed at the structure and linkages available through your site. Not only can my classes learn about Leonardo, but I can use the example of your collaboration with peer/students of other countries as a model for our own distance communications. Altogether a super-site and an achievement.

I have been using this web site as a resource for my District 12 ESL/ELL students in grade 5 for several years. I can confirm that indeed the web site realizes the Freemans' Principles for ESL/EFL success. Congrats on the explicit Multicultural Connections materials you have added. ESL/ELL teachers will make good use of them.

Personally I think that the idea that Leonardo drew him self as the Mona Lisa is very far fetched. I you try hard enough you can make anything line up. Just on another note, I don't understand why everyone is so fascinated with the Mona Lisa anyways. To me she is not easy on the eyes and her facial expresion hold no potential of any underlying meaning. If you want a painting that is the portrait of a true Renaissance lady that is more than easy to admire than look at the painting of Ginevra de'Benci. She is a beautiful woman who is composed and full of self respect. And if you want something to ponder, then ponder why the bottom of the painting that contained her hands has been removed. Honestly there is too much thought and discusion put into the Mona Lisa that many people have not taken the time to appreciate the rest of the work that Leonardo did.

It seems odd that it is also said that the self-portrait the Mona Lisa is compared to is also under debate whether or not that is one of Da Vinci. It has not been proven to be Da Vinci's self-portrait, am I correct?

I think the real reason for the smile of the Mona Lisa being so enigmatic, is fact that she isn’t smiling at all. I believe that it is just her natural expression. I came to this conclusion while viewing photos of real people and realizing that even though some weren’t actually smiling, they indeed look like they were. Which is why the Mona Lisa’s smile is so intriguing – because she’s not actually doing it! Just something to think about.

I disagree with the previous guestbook signer. One of the fascinations of Mona and any intriguing personality or issue, is asking oneself "why." The multiple options and various reponses to that issue suggested here are what makes for the development of intellectual skills. Interactivity is quintessence of Mona's fascination and of that generated by any genuine work of art.
