The thought that Leonardo painted his own face on the Mona Lisa reminds me of the Bible quote: "Vanity of vanity; all is vanity". Ecclesiastes 1-002 (I think...)

As a vegetarian I can really appreciate your new section on that subject. Leonardo was obviously a vegetarian and a humanitarian (in spite of the fact that he was able to construct elaborate machinery of war). The fables and Vegi Links were GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

The attention to detail in Lillian Schwartz's study and graphic, as well as the compelling insight of Firenze's work make this website more than a compendium of LEONARDO info... It is a forum for the shared realization that nothing he created, though instinctively seen to be beautiful, is never easily understood or simple.--Great site!

Isn't it ironic that Leonardo, whose life was about unlocking the mysteries of the universe should himself be shrouded in mystery. Who was he what motivated his art, his love, his sorrow. This website makes solid and successful leaps in unravelling the answers!

In reguards to "why is mona lisa smiling," I have to agree. The facial features are very similiar, its almost freaky how much they look alike. I believe more research should be done on this matter, so that the theories can be proven either true or false.

Leonardo would have been facinated by the use of computers(how he would he add and enhance our existing knowledge about them)to muse about the origins of his imagery such as the Mona Lisa. What greater tribute to his love of feminine beauty and his an acclaimed defiance of the public brutality toward his and all other "effeminate" affinities.

Recently, the New York Times ran an article about the contreversy around the restoration of Leonardo's "Adoration of the Magi", where they dicussed the diagnostic tests, infa-red, X-ray and UV data they were assembling. The historians who were able to view this data so far, said they found a "world" of ideas and design proposals under layers of varnish and dirt. the imagery of some of these findings were not within the final intention of Leonardo, to display as his conception. in any case, we can not know at this point, and even though there are layers of dirt, later painting and varnishing, it may be better not to risk an irreversible mistake. What I like about thiss ite is that it presents the news about Leonardesque happenings, without venturing its own opinion about what is correct.

Mona Lisa, which the artist must have loved so much ,he couldn't part with it(king Francis I obtained it when he died!). Perhaps an unhappy wife of Gioconda forced him to keep it. In any case, the similarity of the portrait to his own face is convincingly revealed in this site, thanks to the staff and the talents and premise of Lillian Schwartz. An artist told me that in some sense we always paint ourselves...Could this be the case? Well here, it seems to be!

In our book, "Invitation To France," it says(At the Louvre)We wondered about the Mona Lisa smile. We saw a cartoon that shows the lady with that enigmatic expression, sitting for her portrait. Standing near the partially completed piece of art, the painter is looking down at the fly of his trousers, saying, “You mean it’s been open all day?” It’s that kind of a smile, isn’t it? Well maybe not. A reference book says that particular smile, with a slight upturn at the corners of her mouth, was at that time, considered a sign of elegance.

As we aproach the close of this year your December dedication page with its beautiful student graphic comemmerating the World trade center, fittingly concludes the year on the same note of optimism and has the same faith in the future that resounds in Leonardo's writngs

How do I find the picture of the Norwegian bridge? How do I find a picture of the Last Supper? How do I get into your site? Why not put a search on it? Obviously full of interesting stuff, but I can't find it.

Thank-you for the insite on this wonderful universal genius' painting. His inventiveness, versatility, and wide ranging intellectual spirit have made him a symbol of Renaissance spirit. Leonardo has had many other paintings, and none other is as famous as the Mona Lisa. It just makes you realize that oh of course his most famous painting would be of himself, even if it is a woman!

I wanted to let you know, that, as someone who is cognizant of the cultural and folkloric value of the Mona Lisa, I was pleased to see that your site addresses the newest New York Times Science Discovery article. Congratulations. Steve Zeitlin Executive Director, City Lore, Inc.
