Hi, I'm a university student and I am looking for the theory (which most critics consider untrue, but I need it anyways) which said that Mona Lisa could be Leonardo self portrait turned to a woman's portrayt; a kind of alter ego of the artist. Could you please help me and tell me whose theory is that, what it says specifically and where I can find some material for my research? Thank you

It was interesting on how Leonardo made Mona look like she was someone else. Instead, it was himself. For a moment, this had me stumped.I definetly recommend this site!!!!!

Mona has never looked better. Now when I look at her I dont' just see the duke's wife, but also a self portrait of the Maestro himself.

A couple of years ago I mentioned on this site that I was starting to write the book, Invitation To Italy. That post still appears, and the book is now published. Please visit http://www.InvitationToTravel.com Why not Travel, rather than How To Travel essays. A trip to Italy is unlike any other trip imaginable. A beautiful, confounding, exciting, educational experience that will be remembered for a lifetime. Italy is cluttered with beautiful old towns and buildings, but more important, Italy is crowded with beautiful, friendly, congenial people. After 112 wonderful nights in 63 different places during eight trips to Italy, beautiful Italy, we don’t remember anything that wasn’t a few hundred, or even a couple of thousand years old. Thank you Jim Humberd

I just finished reading that apocryphal story about the models for the last supper. It is interesting that Leonardo (who knew enough about the anatomy and variety of human proportions tobe able to dispense with models altogether) insisted on a certain degree of selectivity the choice of his models. The relationship of the Christ figure to the Judas in the article is a very poignant one( I'll not disclose any more so others can discover this parable on their own). I was very excited to see the lessons of Leonardo's study process being taught to and emulated by high school students. You have brought out his genius from the dustty Museum / library and have made it live again through the active veneraration which comes from deliberate study.

The biography is so concise and informative, it revealed facts that I wasn't aware of(and I've been reading extensively on Leonardo for 30 years). In fact, the whole site is filled with surprizes and revelations, and realizations of some of his best but unfinished ideas!A SUPER site!

The study goes on! Remember, my elementary school students are doing a Leonardo study and have found your sections on the Bronze horse very helpful. We saw the modern model and many preparatory drawings, but didn't see the one with the plates of bronze armature. i'm sure it's there but I missed it. They thought the graphics were great and colors were especially exciting! We'll Write you again; i'm sure you would like to see what their final projects look like.

I always thought that the Mona Lisa was just a da Vinci painting and we should respect it just because it was done by him. But now after viewing this site I can see that there is more to it than I thought.Could it be a secret picture of Leonardeo himself?I'm convinced that he was the greatest genius in history.

This website has shown me that the format with which we view the Architecture of the mind is based on the designs and notes of Leonardo...From his dissections to his flying machines, the world of science owes so much in its theories of analysis to methods of the great master. And as if that weren't enough, he has brought to us some of history's most memorable icons of beauty and mystery. The Mona Lisa smile and its sitter suggest so much about the intensity of the artist...Was the Lisa a depiction of self? If we look at the saints, madonnas and other characters in his venue , we can easily see the Italo-classical archetype that haunts Leonardo, kindled still in Raphael and flowed through the centuries into the hands of Ingres and beyond... The aphorism goes-"A man's work is a portrait of himself" and I would add a great man has an indesputable right to mirror that which he recognizes.

I am a huge fan of Da Vinci. I appreciate most of what your site had to offer. It would have been quite interesting to have known what this fine intellectual man would think of our technology had he been privy. Perhaps as advanced as his insight was in his day it might not be too big of a surprise. I was, however, disappointed as I went to browse the comments made by previous signers here. How sad that our youth of today can show such enthusiasm over a definite genius like Da Vinci, yet cannot properly spell the simplest of words. I beg to differ the point of proper etiquette on signing your page. Perhaps one should want to go back to grade school to learn how to spell and capitalize before forming an opinion about a genius.

Just to add to my previous mail that the fact that the smile of Mona Lisa would have some link with the smile of the mother of L. Da Vinci would explain some relation with his own face. But it could not be important. Anyway it shows that you could say everything on anything ...
Olivier
USA - Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 04:53:40 (EST)
First thank you for your site !Second : I'm reading a book Freud wrote about Da Vinci, and he is explaining (there are many other information) this smile as the quintescence of the smile of the mother he has lost (as you may know he was volontarily given by his real "peasant" mother to his "noble" father who could not have a child with his rigthful "noble" wife -to make short this story-).This could or could not be accepted. But what is told is that nobody in his time said that there was some likeness between Leonardo and Mona Lisa. And this story of morphing seems to me highly suspicious.Olivier

Why is Davinci so special? This was the question I always asked. I saw his notebooks when my friend showed them pictures to me and I thought it was from a science fi mag until I realized like HEY MAN, these are like 500 years old! How was he thinking about flying machines and drawing the insides of things? When I heard that people were afraid of him I understood. If we had someone like him around to day, I believe he could solve some of these BIG problems we have right now.

When I came upon the Bio of Leonardo,(by Nicolas Pinoch)in your site, I received a ton of information in just a few paragraphs. I now really appreciate the contribultio Leonardo made to Painting in his Sfumato and Chiaro Scuro, in which the softening of outlines combined with somewhat mysterious light and shade contrasts. These effects (Irealize)help painting have a sense of AIR and mood about them. Well I have to go now, but I am looking forward to surfing through this site again!

I've always thougt she was an icon of all that was beautiful and great with our civilizaton, but now I see the depth , complexity, autobiography, puzzlement and high flying genius which is so much a part of Leanardo's dicoveries, inventions and reflections on the realities existing in his mind.

Thank-you for the insite on this wonderful universal genius' painting. His inventiveness, versatility, and wide ranging intellectual spirit have made him a symbol of Renaissance spirit. Leonardo has had many other paintings, and none other is as famous as the Mona Lisa. It just makes you realize that oh of course his most famous painting would be of himself, even if it is a woman!
