I watched your digitalized picture of Leonardo and The Mona Lisa many, many times. I think their noses are totally different shapes. Just my opinion! :)

Is it possible that Leonardo was trying to paint an enigmatic looking woman, but wanted to make it look realistic, and, therefore, used his own facial measurements to portray something other than a self-portrait? Or does the fact that the measurements are about the same imply he just couldn't paint himself very well?

I am a photographer, I love art as well. I love Renaissance art cause I think it was the first introspective period in art. Leonardo of course wasn't just an artist, you've certainly made that clear in this web site. It makes you wonder, maybe the Mona Lisa was smiling cause she was painted by THEE Leonardo! Great job on this site by the way!

The Mona Lisa is my favorite painting. I even love Velasquez black background version of it. I've heard stories that they kept Mona Lisa entertained for hours at a time to make her smile...is that true? I've also heard that the Mona Lisa is the first publicly known document of a smiling portrait. Is that true? I came to you experts because you can tell that whoever made this site is a Leonardo officianardo

Dear Steve Feld and Staff,I have been an ardent fan (worshipper)of Da Vinci since I was a budding art student and science enthusiast decades ago. I have attempted to research, read, buy and covet every available artifact I could. Now, after having seen your beautiful site, surfed through some of of your articles, links, authors, and seemingly endless parade of information, directories and resources, I realize now that what I had thought was the known data on Leonardo is merely the tip of the iceberg! I can now feel that I have REdiscovered him through the virtual magic carpet you have laid down for us to join in the adventure. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (Under your guidance) design and maintain this??? Amazing --Leonardo himself would have been proud of the state of human evolution! I mean, The clear representation of animations and graphics such as: the Mona/self portrait metamorphosis of Lillian Schwartz and Dr Livingstone's (I presume we are speaking of Margaret!)peripheral Softening theory. These (and other) images, are a testament to the efficacy of this more than vitual museum. Not least of all I see it as a connective resource, where all of us can greet each other, tap in to our passion for Leonardo and pursue his life, legacy and work as a paragon for the possibility of human potential.

Here I am, once again, writing in this guestbook, because I pondered upon the Leonardo's music page. I'm a musician, however I had no idea that Da Vinci was, but I always felt his paintings (especially the Last Supper, concentrated an introspective minor chord variation of colors. I think maybe what made Leonardo such a genius is that he was able to relate music to science and science to art and art to life and life music and so on.....he was one big circle. But this site makes my fascination of him more intense and more fulfilled. Thank you very much.

Your site is extremely informative and at the same time has again made this lover of Da Vinci consider the question of how much an artist does project himself and / or an arche type of his ideogramatic language(his mother, idealized woman etc.) into the images he paints. He may do it conciously or not. There seems to be enough of a pattern of what we might ascribe as Da Vinci's female idealizations in the various Madonnas, St. Anne, and Angels as well as other models in his portraiture to convey a special preference for not a mere Graeco- Roman ideal, but a regional Italianate beauty that is as modern as it is classic, was immediately absorbed by Raphael and followers and thus transported through the centuries to Ingres and beyond. Again, I acknowledge the makers of this site for addressing new evidence to this question, provoking discussion (among myself and fellow lovers of Leonardo) and linking me to other aspects of Leonardo which I heretofore have not yet considered. I will be keeping in touch

This site is unlike any other. It's an artist's artist site. But anyone who comes here, reads the Renaissance section and views all this site has to offer, will clearly know that. Great graphics, for the greatest artist of all time, just what the world wibe web has been missing, a site about art that was artistic itself. Keep it up!

I was recommended this site by friend, who like me, is very interested in the study of the arts. A week later, I visited this site during my leisure time, and the minute I saw the clear and briliant web design depicting Leonardo's greatest works, I knew I came to the right place. I want the founders of this site to know that the futurism link created a mixture of psychedelic graphic design combined with the quientessential rennaissance painting, that I feel is extremely organic and representative of what technology meeting authentic past can do. I was amazed at that link and felt obligated to sign this guestbook in critique and thanks of that link in particular and the entire site. Keep up the great work!

i think that the person who modeled for the mona lisa is a real person. not leonardo himself. in one book i read about famous painters, it said who modeled for him. sorry i can't remember the name of the book at the moment. on the moving picture you have, it shows the face features moveing so that the chins are differant. also the head of the mona lisa and leonardo are very differant- the head of the mona lisa is smaller and narrower- leonardo has a bigger nose and chin and his face is wider. im sorry to bother you if what i found is incorrect. but i thank you for your time and effort in this who ordeal of who is who. thank you.

Hi again, My children and I discussed Mona's eye color and their eye color and my eye color. They think eyes can be any color. 2 have brown, 1 has the bluest blue and the other Hazel. I have brown. The are still to little to understand about genetics. But, we had a fun discussion. The five year old said " maybe Leonardo just wanted mom to look more like him so they have the same color eyes in the painting." Maybe. We love your site! Keep up the great work!

As the President of Monday Morning Moms, a Family Childcare Management Service, I primarily work with very young children and their parents. As an educator however, I enjoyed learning about all that I did not know about Leonardo. I was especially struck by the fact that one could really consider him to be a futurist. You should all be very proud of your work on the site and the relationships you show to what is going on here and now. I will certainly make the time to visit the site again. Keep up the good work.
