I hardly paid any heed to the continuous attention that the Mona Lisa has acquired over the centuries. My focus has always been, Medicine and Journalism. I have been privileged to win city-wide awards for Science and Creative Writing, for the past three years. As junior at Cardozo High School, the only reason I signed for Art History, was because it was mandatory. However, an interest has been sparked in my teenage mind. Mona Lisa, with her mystical smile and poise, has many secrets. I am inclined to agree with Ms. Shwartz's theory. Maybe Da Vinci was trying to gain his own type of revenge against his patrons. Maybe he found Mona Lisa to be a sneaky way of gaining the "last laugh". "I know she is not ravishingly beautiful, she's ME!", Da Vinci might have chuckled. Anatomically speaking, this theory is reasonable, both Da Vinci's and Mona Lisa's face are proportional to each other. But the mind and thoughts of the artist-genius lie beyond human comprehension; it remains a mystery. His Mona Lisa is a masterpiece; spurning questions 'til the end of time.

I have read the story of "Mona" by Reinaldo Arenas which really gets you into thinking about the "Mona Lisa" and to come here and see the superimposed of the self potrait and the Mona Lisa makes it must more real it seems king of strange and definetly very enigmatic. Just thought I share the amazement that it brought to me after having read the story. Very good work

OK, here's how it is. The girl name is Mel, and she posed for me because she was walkng past my house when I felt like painting. I paid her with a loaf of bread and grapes and she is smiling because I told her to. No reason other than that. So, no mystery, no romance, no bull. But, it does give university lecturers a topic to waste weeks on when handing out art history degrees. by the way, why are the angels' fingernails at that mid-average length in Michaelangelos' Cistine Chapel paintings? Maybe another question to add to art historians little intelligent notebooks?

EXCELLENT! Before visiting this website I knew very little about the Mona Lisa. Now I've been told that it was DA VINCI HIMSELF who was in the painting. This website is educational and it leaves people thinking if it really was da Vinci HIMSELF and WHY THE MONA LISA IS SMILING.

4 lillan to say that the mona lisa is a self portrait, wellthat is a lie. why would leonardo paint a women to be a self portrait of a man? anyways leonardo's head goes o far back. who cares that the lips, nose, and other things line up,maybe he used himself to paint them in the correct place. when we go to heaven you can ask leonardo himself. the last 3 entries are funny! heheheheheh

I think that Dr. Schwartz's theory is very tantilizing and could very well be the truth. I studied the background and in da Vinci's time, artists paid very close attention to detail in every part of the painting. The background of the "Mona Lisa" is well done, obviously, but I found it not to be as in focus as other works of his time are. Also, the landscape seems odd when it's first looked at. That's becuase it's not in proportion with Lisa. The subject must be sitting on a ledge of some sort for no middle ground to be present. The fact that there is no middle ground in the portrait also makes the piece unique. The whole thing is good to think about when there isn't anything important to think about.

LEONARDOS 3D MAGIC EYE If you look at the portrait of Mona Lisa for long enough adjusting your focal point(similar to when you focus on one of those 3d magic eye pictures), I believe it is possible to see several faces, looking from different directions but all looking towards you. I find all of these faces to have a masculine appearance. Nice one Leonardo ! (this works better when looking at the real thing or a good print, don't try looking at your monitor too long)

You should include the work of Leonardo's Bestiary Physiologus on animal behavior and Morals. I'm an artist, computer systems engineer and write. I like William Blake also. This is a set that goes with the music.... Keep up the good work. "1228Fidelity or Loyalty The cranes are so faithful and loyal to their king that at night, when he is sleeping, some of them go around the Field to keep watch at a distance; others remain near, each holding a stone in his foot, so that if sleep should overcome them, this stone would fall and make so much noise that they would wake up again. And there are others which sleep together around the king; and this they do every Night, changing in turn so that their king may never find them wanting.FALSEHOOD The FOX when it sees a flock of jackdaws or magpies or birds of that kind, suddenly flings himself on the ground with his mouth open to look as if he were dead; and these birds want to peck at his tongue, and he bites off their heads."

Hi, JFK H.S. -- This is Richard Jordan, a member of the Board of Governors of the Naitonal Arts Club on Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Really interesting project on the Miho Museum. First, let me say that it was not clear where on the planet JFK H.S. is -- I figured out the Bronx from various clues. But, more importantly, at the Arts Club, we do a lot of work with students and the arts. We are a 100-year old arts educational organization that admitted men on a full and equal basis with women 100 years ago. Freddie Ferrer has been to the Club, and Mayor Dinkins visits as often as he can. The food is REAL good, lots of receptions and stuff like that, with art exhibition openings. I am planning a series at the Club for the Millennium called "The Dialogue of Civilizations". The questions that you asked are really imporrtant ones and go to the heart of the matter. I.M. Pei has received two Gold Medal Awards from us, and maybe we can arrange for some way in which we and lots of you can all participate in some event. Would like to speak with you about it, maybe even have you help plan it. Send an e-mail. I'm wired. Later, Richard J.

Congratulations to he students of this JFK High School Web Site for winning the contest and for sharing with the wide world your enthusiastic interest in the life and times of Leonardo da Vinci. Mystery of the Mona Lisa reviewsMy answer to your quest: "Why is the Mona Lisa smiling" is that her smile is now a happier smile as in my book Mystery of the Mona Lisa, the truth about her portrait is finally out!
