Why is the Mona Lisa smiling?-a question to intrigue all ages, especially that of elementary students. A wonderful project to incorporate into the elementary curriculum would be to create a Why is the Mona Lisa smiling? Quilt. Each student would create a square reflecting their idea of why Mona Lisa is smiling. Squares can be created from simple paper towel and students would draw their ideas with markers. The squares will then be connected to form a quilt.

After reading Dr.Schwartz's comments it seems to make perfect sense. Especially when you consider a man like Leonardo who kept such good records has no record for a model for his most admired painting. I think the smile was Leonardo's way of saying this will be my immortal secret.

Leonardo da Vinci seems like a pretty weird guy. Why was the Mona Lisa called that name if it was himself? Why didn't he just paint himself, why someone else? How many inventions did he record? Was he married? Was Mona Lisa his middle name? Did he have any ancesestors?

smithfield, NC USA - Friday, March 10, 2000 at 08:23:07 (EST)
Since I first read about Mrs. Schwartz's theory on the Mona Lisa, I was in full agreement, because Leonardo was such a personality who would indulge in intriguing works. It was him who suggested studying stains on the wall as a sourse of inspiration and enhancement of artistic creativity. This is exactly what I did to arrive at my version which I call "Anthropomorphic Landscape with Giocondesque Topography" which you can see on my site.

Excellent work! I too have a group of kids that started a WebQuest project at our school. Your class project is the "marquee" of WebQuest and is well known. Not to mention the article that appeared in the March issue of Technology & Learning. I am fortunate enough to have some talented kids on my team and look forward to completing our project. My hat is off to you and your kids. It only goes to show that a little hard work, creativeness and determination will bear much fruit. Darel Madrid Site Technician Barranca Mesa Elementary

That's the adventage of technology. Yes, there was an astounding similarity between Da Vinci and the Mon aLisa he painted. But aside from that, are there any concrete proof that Leo painted HIMSELF? that Mona Lisa is a portayal of him?

Hi, JFK H.S. -- This is Richard Jordan, a member of the Board of Governors of the Naitonal Arts Club on Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Really interesting project on the Miho Museum. First, let me say that it was not clear where on the planet JFK H.S. is -- I figured out the Bronx from various clues. But, more importantly, at the Arts Club, we do a lot of work with students and the arts. We are a 100-year old arts educational organization that admitted men on a full and equal basis with women 100 years ago. Freddie Ferrer has been to the Club, and Mayor Dinkins visits as often as he can. The food is REAL good, lots of receptions and stuff like that, with art exhibition openings. I am planning a series at the Club for the Millennium called "The Dialogue of Civilizations". The questions that you asked are really imporrtant ones and go to the heart of the matter. I.M. Pei has received two Gold Medal Awards from us, and maybe we can arrange for some way in which we and lots of you can all participate in some event. Would like to speak with you about it, maybe even have you help plan it. Send an e-mail. I'm wired. Later, Richard J.
