Interesting interpertation. I've heard it before, along with the computer mirroring and it does have a certain kernal of truth, or at least one can see what is behind the idea. I guess it goes to show you don't have to hire a model if you don't want to. One can always use one's imagination. Leonardo obviously did just that. Perhaps that's one his lessons for us. Think! Use your noggin. You have an interesting web site. Keep up the good work.

I have only one question...what about the eyebrows? It has always amazed me that a (presumably) Italian woman, with the darker skin and hair, would have what appears to be no eyebrows. Perhaps it was the style then to remove them? Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

I do extensive volunteering in my local public school system as an art appreciation facilitator. During the next four months I will be doing nearly a hundred presentations to 13 elementary school classes. Leonardo is one of my very favorite artists to present. The kids can identify so closely with his restless mind, his difficulty in completing work, his self-doubt. Yet they can also see how he drastically underestimated himself. I am interested in any URL's with interesting thoughts and creative graphics about any artists, or art in general. If you know of any good ones, I would love to hear from you! Best wishes to my fellow art lovers! -- Cindy

The qeustion of weither or no it was himself was a good theory. my opinoin was that he maybe imagined his perfect lady in his head , the similarities could just be familar with maybe his mother had the same features.

Great site, I didn't believe the theory that Leonardo di Vinci painted himself for the Mona Lisa, but with the morphing animation all layed out like that, it definitely seems possible (ah yes, the wonders of technology), however, I wouldn't bet on it. I have often wondered, though, what Leo di Vinci would discover if he were alive today.

Fascinating! What an absolutely intriguing discovery. Itis totally reasonable and believable, as DaVinci was an extraordinary man. He would be pleased to know that someonediscovered his cleverly concealed secret portrait. I alsoenjoyed hearing some of his tunes. A fascinating man, eons ahead of his and OUR time. An entertaining and informative site, thanks!

I have long thought that the Mona Lisa resembled the self-Portraits of Leonardo da Vinci. The smile? He would have been greatly amused, I think, at the idea of Having us allon, as well as a making a commentary or search about ideas of gender.

I think that Lillian Schwartz's theory is most likely to be right. She had the intelligence to try to "fit" the faces together and, as the picture that morphs from Da Vinci to Mona Lisa shows, the forms fit together. I think that Da Vinci painted this painting to show a self portrait as he would like to express himself.

We, the enthusiastic and vibrant members of a class at Manhattanville College, along with select authentic student learners are here at Futurekids on the 15 of January, in the year 2000 C.E. to explore social and emotional learning through technology. All of us had fun, and many of us had our first experiences using technology in a way other than word processing. We all discovered things about heros and how they help us grow socially and emotionally, and how we can show our students and maybe even our teachers what we learned. Our group, a mixed bag of students and teachers reacted to the Mona Lisa site mostly in the way of breaking paradigms. I certainly didn't think of transvestism the first time I saw the Mona Lisa. This helps us look outside of accepted teacher and student roles to find new ways to engage each other and learn together.

by the way, da vinci started the mona lisa in 1503, and was never fully satisfied with the result and carried it with him. the mona lisa was the young wife of a famous italian merchant that commissioned the artist to paint a portrait of his wife. the smile supposedly came from the way in which leo da vinci kept his subject from getting bored. he'd hire poets and musicians to entertain her and keep her refreshed. in addition, the mona lisa's background is thought to have an inkling of being a precursor of surrealism

The comment that made the most impact on me was the one that said...art resembles you, for you are what you are used to...not someone else. Since I've been doing some work in the area of character ed lately, this says to me that LD's character must have been one that was caring, fair, respectful, honest...since that is the feeling that I got from viewing the Mona.

I thought this was an excellent website. Comming from a social emotional point of view I thought it allowed to empathize with the feelings Divincci might have had when he painted the Monna Lisa. As an educator I thought it was a great place for children to surf around and see what other children are creating.

I think that he was looking for the most perfect woman to paint. I think the portrait is of his love and da Vinci thought she was the perfect woman he was looking for. He wanted to paint a perfect portrait of the perfedt woman so he would paint as slowly and as carefully as he could, somedays he would only paint one stroke. I think the reason he stopped painting the portrait was because she was having an afair with da Vinci, and when she broke it off he was so heart broken that he couldn't finish it, because he couldn't bear to look at her anymore, so he just put it to the side, and then he died. I think the smile that she is wearing has something to do with their relationship. I think that she had fallen out of love with him before he started the picture and she couldn't bear to tell him, but then she finally did. That is my theory behind the portrait

Hi, JFK H.S. -- This is Richard Jordan, a member of the Board of Governors of the Naitonal Arts Club on Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Really interesting project on the Miho Museum. First, let me say that it was not clear where on the planet JFK H.S. is -- I figured out the Bronx from various clues. But, more importantly, at the Arts Club, we do a lot of work with students and the arts. We are a 100-year old arts educational organization that admitted men on a full and equal basis with women 100 years ago. Freddie Ferrer has been to the Club, and Mayor Dinkins visits as often as he can. The food is REAL good, lots of receptions and stuff like that, with art exhibition openings. I am planning a series at the Club for the Millennium called "The Dialogue of Civilizations". The questions that you asked are really imporrtant ones and go to the heart of the matter. I.M. Pei has received two Gold Medal Awards from us, and maybe we can arrange for some way in which we and lots of you can all participate in some event. Would like to speak with you about it, maybe even have you help plan it. Send an e-mail. I'm wired. Later, Richard J.
