I especially enjoyed the Classroom Connection link from your site. The current topic, about colonial life in America, would be a great resource for lesson plans about a book I was introduced to during my recent middle school student teaching rotation--the With of Blackbird Pond. The book takes place in early colonial America, and I could see developing lesson plans that focus on the book, but also take advantage of the inforamtion in the Classroom Connect site. Kids could use it for independent research projects that could help them better understand the book and what life was like hundreds of years ago in America.

Best wishes to all who created this magnificent site for a happy new year, new century, new millenium. I hope your wonderful work continues now that we are in the 21st century. Keeping the beauty of Mona Lisa and her creator Leonardo alive and thriving is truly a gift to us all.

The enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa will continue into the new millennium to tantalize and to afford flights of fancy, just as it did 500 years ago when Leonardo originally painted his famous portrait. The Mona Lisa will tempt young viewers as they explore the capacities of the Internet to delve further into her mystery. Dr. Sally-Anne Milgrim, Prof. of English Education, Hunter College

I began teaching Antigone to my ninth grade English class. I discovered that the Internet can be an incredibly valuable resource. I was able to download three-dimensional reproductions of ancient Greek drama masks, and schematics of ancient Greek theaters. I see the same potential here with the English link and specifically the Shakespeare section. Having The Bard's plays online can be a great addition to any type of drama lesson. With a large screen monitor hooked up to the computer, it's easy to go line by line in a play and have it come alive for students. I appreciate having this type of resource available. Keep up the good work!

As the director of the Business for Children project in NYC Public Schools, this site has been a source of inspiration for our students who are creating original greeting cards as part of their school-based economics curriculum. The business links interest our high school students who are learning to write resumes and to investigate careers. This site is truly an outstanding educational resource.

I am beginning a new job as a fifth grade teacher in Bedford, New York in January. I am so excited at the prospect of using this Internet site in my classroom. There is so much information here for upper elementary students to use. The connection to the social studies and science curriculum is excellent and even the millennium celebration. The multitude of links this site offers and cross curriculum connections is amazing and it brings many ideas to my mind for reaching the NY Standards in new ways.

I think that the reason the features of ML and he are so similar is because it's proven that you tend to create art that resembles you for you are what you are used to, not someone else. I think that you will see that a number of art works resemble features of the artist, male or female.

I like that you posted your opinion on the net for others to read. It seems believable, but yet unbelievable. I somewhat agree with your theory. People might not know who the model for the painting was, but I still think she did exist and that she did pose for the painting. I think the woman in the picture was real and if not DaVinci painted himself as a pretty unattractive looking woman. I think she was real due to the detail in her body. I am still not quite convinced.
Megan
Slatington, PA USA - Monday, December 06, 1999 at 10:45:02 (EST)
I do belive the theory that the Mona Lisa was and is a self portrait of Leonardo DaVinci. There is also the thought of "Why would he paint himself as a woman?". There is evidence that it is a self portrait as others have thought of this theory as well.

To think that right now,out in space, heading towards Mars, is a space probe that can determine for use whether life is possible on another planet. How we do think Divinci would respond to such amazing events? A great visionary of his time, and way ahead of his time. Many just think of him as an artist, but he was so much more.

It's kinda helpful, but I think u need to add more information to support your ideas. For some kids today who are doing Leonardo, need a sense of direction, and I think your site has the capability to do that.

I got totally sidetracked, for a chemistry project project I was researching information on Oxygen, my chosen element. It was stated that Leonardo pondered tha air consisted of at least two different gases - so here I am. Incredible guy, now it's back to chemistry.

I thought this site was very interesting. There were a lot of neat "click on's with fun and valuable information. I am a health educator in an elementary school. I specialize in the social and emotional health (as well as the mental and physical aspects) of my students by infusing Dr. Maurice Elias' Social Decision Making / Social Problem Solving curriculum into an already existing health curriculum. I also use Brian Friedlander's Guide to Social Problem Solving software to assist my students in internalizing social and emotional competencies. Since I'm always looking for innovative ways to engage my students in the ways to live healthy...my mind is already clicking on how this site might help me reach that goal. I know I will share this site with our art and music teacher for sure!

I enjoyed going through the Partners Page. I think that my middle school students would really get a kick out of seeing some of the feedback that your efforts have gotten, such as the letter from the Getty Foundation. This is the kind of thing that shows students that their work is seen and recognized outside of the school community and also shows them the importance of doing work well.

Hi, JFK H.S. -- This is Richard Jordan, a member of the Board of Governors of the Naitonal Arts Club on Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Really interesting project on the Miho Museum. First, let me say that it was not clear where on the planet JFK H.S. is -- I figured out the Bronx from various clues. But, more importantly, at the Arts Club, we do a lot of work with students and the arts. We are a 100-year old arts educational organization that admitted men on a full and equal basis with women 100 years ago. Freddie Ferrer has been to the Club, and Mayor Dinkins visits as often as he can. The food is REAL good, lots of receptions and stuff like that, with art exhibition openings. I am planning a series at the Club for the Millennium called "The Dialogue of Civilizations". The questions that you asked are really imporrtant ones and go to the heart of the matter. I.M. Pei has received two Gold Medal Awards from us, and maybe we can arrange for some way in which we and lots of you can all participate in some event. Would like to speak with you about it, maybe even have you help plan it. Send an e-mail. I'm wired. Later, Richard J.

Congratulations to he students of this JFK High School Web Site for winning the contest and for sharing with the wide world your enthusiastic interest in the life and times of Leonardo da Vinci. Mystery of the Mona Lisa reviewsMy answer to your quest: "Why is the Mona Lisa smiling" is that her smile is now a happier smile as in my book Mystery of the Mona Lisa, the truth about her portrait is finally out!
