Nice site, but ... (sorry) Everybody who draws or paints themselves finds out that EVERY artist always draws/paints his own face, unconsciously. That's why it's such a big deal to make a good portret of someone else.

I originally signed on to help a friend for a report, but as I read on and figured what we would write about, the mona lisa came to mind. Well today I learned something new and realized why I am so fascinated with it and the name just rolls off my tongue, as if it was a household name.

Dear Mr.Feld, I am currently attending the University of North Alabama in the elementary education program. Right now I am taking an instructional technology class with required artical reading. I chose this artical and was blown out of the water whith what all you did. I remember working with the Tandy 1000 in elementary school. I am very impressed with your work as a teacher. It motivated me to strive to be the best teacher I could be and look for the good in everything.Chanda, Winfield, AL

The Mona Lisa is infact the wife of a florentine banker. This has not been widely known because it has been called Mona Lisa for so long that nobody really cares. Leonardo or any other sane artist would not actually paint himself as a woman.

Hello, I saw a blurb about this site on Pointcast and decided to check it out. Need to keep tabs on the competing High Schools, eh? Your Leonardo/Mona Lisa merge was interesting, but may I suggest that the two pictures are in the same dimensions because Leonardo was a math freak and used a the "perfect rectangle" as a model for each? Now, for extra credit, tell me how this relates to Fibonacci patterns...

It appears to be a strech (pun intended) to me. I've see other morphing images and the impression I got was that by gradually varying the shapes you could morph an object into just about anything. Kind of like seeing images in clouds.
William
USA - Sunday, September 12, 1999 at 14:37:35 (EDT)
I don't buy it. When the "morph" occurs, sure the features align. But the nose becomes less bulbous, the cheekbones recede, and the eyes lose the wrinkles. Just because DaVinci uses the same principles of compostion and placement in the two pictures doesn;t mean that he used himself as the model for the Mona Lisa.

I would like to see how other portraits by Leonardoare similar/dissimilar to the Mona Lisa. An artist/scientist/student starts with what they know and then moves on to new territory. It is not unusual tofind common elements of style, color or design in anaritst's work. Faces have finite shapes: oval, round, oblong.More research is required of more portraits.

Great Site. It is really amazing what science can do nowadays with computers. If we can only imagine that Leonardo's work was all in his brain. I have studied a lot on Leonardo and his work. The man was a real artist and scientist. Something that in our days is missing. In any case, the fact that Mona Lisa has this weird look may be one of Leonardo's hidden sides. I am sure that if more investigations go on in the case of Mona, then more interesting findings will come up in the surface. Good job guys.

Why should Leonardo paint himself as Mona Lisa? The fact that the features of the face aligned perfectly seams to me that it was his own daughter he painted. Fathers often resemblers there children.

I think that this is a Good site but the idea that the Mona Lisa was a painting of the painter himself that just dumb I think that you people need to just leave it alone because maybe he just didn't want anyone to know the person could be his lover his sister his mother it could a person he saw one day and wanted to paint her. But either way it goes the idea that he painted hisself is just the dumbest thing I ever heard and if you reply to this please give me the docotors e-mail address who said it because I wanna tell them the same thing because that just sounds so dumb. I think that its none of our business.

Who ever suggested that Leonardo used himself as the model for Mona Lisa is out of his/her mind. It's a historical fact that Mona Lisa was a 3rd wife of old Florentian Francesco del Giocondo. Leonardo worked on Mona Lisa for 4 years and still considered it unfinished. The only question is "Was Mona Lisa Leonardo's lover?", remember that at that time de Vinci was 50. I think if she wasn't Leonardo's lover her husband wouldn't sell the painting to king Francisc I for 45,000 francs.

I had my very small art/music history class look at your morph of the Mona Lisa, we all agreed that it and de Vinci looked a lot alike. Thank you for this informative site.

I am a homeschool mom. I enjoy surfing the web looking for educational stuffto supplement our curriculum. Our family was very intrigued to learn that when da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, he possibly used himself as the model. Thanks!

This theory really supports the stigma of Mona being an ugly woman!

There should be more portraits that Leonardo has painted There should be a web page for students to go to if they have an assignment about artists such as Leonardo

Wondering through your brilliant website, I have discovered a fatal flaw in the education I received in the CharterSchool system in Arizona. Some of the art I found in yoursite,I had not seen in school before. I appreciate that there arepeople out there who care about the educational process andthe enrichment of society. The vast network of links and information on this site willrequire frequent visitation to fully assimulate its content.Thanx for the great site!

Dear Students,I am an art teacher in Kettering Ohio. I have found your work inspirational. I will introduce some of my students to it this year. I am going to use parts of your research on a bulletin board if that is ok with you. I teach elementary students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School. Will you be having any future sites? Thank you for your work. susan Bennett

As a NYC School District Math Director for many years and creator of a nationally acclaimed economics program, Card Connection, I recommend this site as an excellent problem solving construct using art and language arts in service of mathematics and science investigations. This site can be used by children from Kindergarten through graduate school. As an instructor for the New York City Board of Education New Teacher Staff Development Program, I commend this site as a wonderful resource for teachers to use technology in service of research and student-centered projects.

Hi, JFK H.S. -- This is Richard Jordan, a member of the Board of Governors of the Naitonal Arts Club on Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Really interesting project on the Miho Museum. First, let me say that it was not clear where on the planet JFK H.S. is -- I figured out the Bronx from various clues. But, more importantly, at the Arts Club, we do a lot of work with students and the arts. We are a 100-year old arts educational organization that admitted men on a full and equal basis with women 100 years ago. Freddie Ferrer has been to the Club, and Mayor Dinkins visits as often as he can. The food is REAL good, lots of receptions and stuff like that, with art exhibition openings. I am planning a series at the Club for the Millennium called "The Dialogue of Civilizations". The questions that you asked are really imporrtant ones and go to the heart of the matter. I.M. Pei has received two Gold Medal Awards from us, and maybe we can arrange for some way in which we and lots of you can all participate in some event. Would like to speak with you about it, maybe even have you help plan it. Send an e-mail. I'm wired. Later, Richard J.

Congratulations to he students of this JFK High School Web Site for winning the contest and for sharing with the wide world your enthusiastic interest in the life and times of Leonardo da Vinci. Mystery of the Mona Lisa reviewsMy answer to your quest: "Why is the Mona Lisa smiling" is that her smile is now a happier smile as in my book Mystery of the Mona Lisa, the truth about her portrait is finally out!
