so, WHY is the mona lisa smiling? i wasnt quite sure that this site answered this, though i it was very interesting to see the morph. i think the why is simply that da vinci wanted to create the inner happiness that we all wish to aquire some day. kind of like a stae of zen, or somehting. i dont think that drwing himself had much to do with the fact that mona lisa is smiling.

Very interesting idea, however, can you give any insight as to whether Mona Lisa was based on a real woman's features, with little bits of da Vinci thrown in? I think the idea is fascinating.

My understanding of the portrait of the Mona Lisa is that there was a true Mona Lisa, she was actually named Madonna Lisa and was the wife of a banker from Florentine. This is stated in the book by Horst de la Croix, "Art Through the Ages".

Thank you very much for this site! I found it very informative, as I am researching Leonardo da Vinci for a paper. I think this whole theory is interesting, as I do for most of da Vinci's works. I believe he was in fact painting a real woman, but influenced her physical characteristics with some of his own facial expressions. That example was excellent!

W. Hartford, CT USA - Sunday, April 11, 1999 at 11:17:06 (EDT)
I think that the conclusion of Leonardo painting himself , as a girl, using the same lines just filling them in to create an womanly appearance has a really good chance of being true, realistic, and more believeable than some of the other very dumb theories that others may have came up with. After all I believe it that Leonardo could actually be "Mona Lisa". This site was very informable about why people think the way that she might about the possible reasons why Mona Lisa is smiling! Thanks for the great info.

I enjoyed your page tremendously, and was especially impressed by the powerful example it gives of technology being harnessed to achieve positive social impact.I think this is especially true, as it was created with 15 year old computers, it sends a message both to participants in its creation, and to readers (such as myself) that the Internet need not fall prey to a divide between technological "haves" and "have nots", and therefore exacerbate broader analogous social divides. For what it is worth (which is probably not much), my own view of Lillian Schwartz's theory about DaVinci having used a feminised version of himself as the model for the Mona Lisa, is that the conclusions she draws from her evidence are, perhaps, exaggerated.I should have thought that all artists tend to project themselves, to some extent, into their work. In many ways, the Arts, visual and otherwise, are about the artist's view of the world from his eyes, and an attempt to see himself or his truths in the world around him.Keep up the good work!
