I dont understand something. The web site is about the Mona Lisa but there is no Mona Lisa here. Why is that?or did I just not look hard enough? After I left the monitor, my friend Chris said "what were you working on?" I told him I was trying to fina a Mona Lisa, and he said "Let me try". When I came back I had a Mona Lisa backdrop! Lillian's theory makes sense. I had heard previously, though, that the Mona Lisa was a composite, with one lady posing for the eyes, another for the nose, another for the smile, one for the hands, etc. . . And a Happy New Year to you!

Dr. Schwartz I agree with your theory, I read somewhere that on confirmation for authenticity by X-rays, after the painting was stolen and then recovered, that the X-rays revealed Mona Lisa had once had a beard, that had been painted over...Your work is very interesting, I enjoyed reading about it!

Perhaps part of what Leonardo found worthy in his subject for the Mona Lisa were those qualities which mirrored his own image...certain aspects of the woman...her smile...the shape of her face....were a reflection of himself, nonetheless honoring the individuality of the subject being painted.

I am in love with the figure of Leonardo to the point of obsession. This is a very nice web page. Quickly, it is very easy to "project backward" ideas, opionions, and ways of thinking to societies of 500 years ago that may "seem" relevant to us today, but often miss the mark in the content of the overall reality of that era. Much of Leonardo will never be known of...only quessed at. What a fascinating passion of creative energy he was!!

I remember once reading a theory that the Mona Lisa is not really smiling--she is simply covering her bad teeth and a history of dental problems. Since Leonardo was renowned for his handsomeness, he probably did not have bad teeth. Therefore, they are probably not the same person. Thanks for the theory, though. Leonardo would have loved the internet!

It is impossible for Leonardo to have painted himself because if it were him he would have never carried it around with him and why would he say it was never finished.

GREAT JOB ON THE SITE YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ANOTHER FACT ABOUT MONA LISA: LEO NEVER MET HIS MOTHER. HE HAD AN EMPTY PLACE IN HIS HEART FOR HER, SO WHEN THE LADY OF MILAN ASKED HIM TO PAINT A SELF PORTRAIT OF HIMSELF FOR HER, HE PAINTED THE FEMALE VERSION OF HIMSELF REPRESENTING HIS MOTHER. THE LADY OF MILAN NEVER RECEIVED THE PAINTING.
