Author : Steve Feld

Objectives:
Students will be able to :

  1. Incorporate design theory into a logo design for FluidArts.
  2. Identify warm and cool colors
  3. Understand that a Logo design represents a corporate identity.
  4. Create their design on the computer (student-centered, student owned)
  5. Create a duplicate design with a different color scheme.
  6. Effectively use computer graphics and technology as a tool for the creation of a particular purpose logo. ( Art Standard 14)
  7. Evaluate effectiveness of their logo design given the targeted purpose. (Art Standard 15)
  8. Communicate with onsite and International peers to increase understanding.
  9. Access and integrate the Internet inservice of student collaboration and conversation for an authentic academic and global marketplace purpose.
  10. Contribute to the Internet body of knowledge through artwork, translation and ongoing Internet facilitated communications.

Motivation:
Through our efforts to dissolve the digital divide, Kennedy students are working with MIKSIKE, a company located in Estonia. We have completed translating their web site into the Spanish language. Next, our translating team will tackle the Virtual African River Festival web site.

Part of this project involves creating art work, specifically a student design a LOGO design for Millénaire FluidArts Project. This Project is a non profit enterprise founded by Deborah Phelan to which Steve Feld was named a founding board member. Mr. Feld was named as a board member based on the JFK student work and the existing Mona Lisa Web site (student-centered, student owned.

Procedure:

Before the students begin to design the Fluidarts LOGO, they will explore and clarify the following art principles:

Students will be challenged to discuss : Why is it easy to remember the Nike Logo?

They will be facilitated to identify the following key elements which will also serve as the criteria for later peer evaluation of their own designs

  1. Elements look like they belong together.
  2. Design colors are contrasting.
  3. Letters all belong in the same alphabet.
  4. Design makes a clear statement about the company.
  5. Identify well known logos and their particular designs.

Students will decide if they want to use an existing alphabet or to design the letters from scratch.

The students will be asked whether they want to use flat letters or those with three dimension?

They will examine how "fluidity" might be shown between letters. eg. Consider lines, organization of space, textures and contours.

Students will explore how using refections on 3-D letter forms will highlight the light source.

Summary:

Students will critique according to given criteria and discuss designs which addresses FluidArts mission.

Designs will be shared with FluidArts for peer consideration and final selection as their corporate and web logo.

Assessment:
Exact measurement through tabulation of voting and qualitative measurement through student comments.

FluidArts Design Logo Poll

Homework follow-up Students will prepare a page in their sketchpads which illustrates ten popular Logos they see everyday.

Arts Standards Alignment

Standard 14 - Students will effectively used visual arts , media, techniques, and processes with an understanding of how the creation of visual art is influenced by the artist's purpose.
( Students take responsibility for their own work)

Standard 15 - Students will evaluate the effectiveness of a range of... symbols and Ideas for use in the creation of visual arts, with an understanding of how visual arts is influenced by the artist's purpose. (Curriculum and Standards)

Adaptability:
1. ESL students can participate in the lesson through utilizing their native language capacities and yet produce a viable, peer critiquable product.
2. This lesson is particularly inclusive for students with Special Needs since they could participate on an equal basis through designing a logo. (Instructional Design).

The role of the teacher:
The teacher facilitates student learning through individualize coaching, one on one conferencing, facilitating small group meetings and offers tips for refining logo designs. The whole class is engaged in peer critiques and reflective discussions, unhampered by teacher directed commentary.

Use of the Web Medium:
This project engages students in significant purposeful use of the Internet. Specifically the use the FluidArts Web Site as a resource for their designs.

FluidArts

Their sense of target audience and understanding of the FluidArts Logo is deepened, enhanced and authenticated by their collaboration with MIKSIKE where they have begun to translate and illustrate those pages into Spanish.

MIKSIKE eWorksheets

To ground them in the principles of Logo Designs from the Awareness of multicultural perspectives, they view ArtiFAQ 2100 a student centered project as a resource.

ArtiFAQ 2100

Ease of use :
The logo design lesson is exceedingly easy to manage in a typical classroom, since it has a target attainable end product which makes a purposeful impact on the world. Students get immediate feedback and support from the instructor in their real-life artistic enterprise. They also get qualitative and quantitative feedback from an audience on onsite and international peers.

Therefore they are immediately drawn into an Internet facilitated circle of literate student artists, reflectors and culturally aware web community members.

Title Comments

FluidArts Logo Design "An interesting lesson. I was especially pleased to note that the entrant had developed some adaptive activities, etc. for ; students with special needs. I also thought it was interesting to see that ; the teacher mentions feedback through a guestbook as one of the components ; regarding assessment." ; FluidArts Logo Design A great concept which has many excellent dimensions to ; it. It would be desireable to tell more explicitly the role of the teacher ; in each step of the project so that it can be adapted by teachers in their ; classrooms. Also, while the criteria are stated and the poll and logo selection are great aspects of your work, there needs to be a more concrete assessment tool which provides feedback to the students on their individual projects: where they succeeded, where they need to focus more attention, and where they did not meet the stated criteria. Overall, a good job! I must mention that in the final round, your submission was set aside due to the fact that it was not strictly a lesson but rather a project created by ; your students. ; Having worked with teachers who have made the finalists in ThinkQuest Jr. I can appreciate the work you have done. We don't want to in anyway place your ; submission in a negative light. As you can see from the judges comments this was an amazing site. The problem was merely that this contest was not well matched to your ThinkQuest project. It is an amazing project, however. Thank you for your obvious efforts at helping students learn in new and innovative ways. Congratulations on your good news and success with your project in a Contest that matched its hard work and effort. J:)

Dear Jeremiah:

Thank you for the notification about the Master Search contest. Yes, I am interested in the comments about our submission but I am pleased to see that we received a high score of 41. Please send the comments so I can reflect upon them.

This was a triumphant week for the same inner city Bronx High school students who participated in the Logo Project.

They met the Microsoft Challenge to predict Art 2100 tjrough a research grounded review of the materpieces of art past and present and the creation of their own graphic depictions of Art 2100 complete with descriptions. The web site we created ArtiFAQ 2100 functions as an expansion of of our award winneing Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling ThinkQuest project, which focused on an in depth multiple perspectives study of Leonardo as artist, inventor, futurist, scientistm, writer and citizen of the world. The students built on their expertise with multimedia production, web design, integration of rewards, music, use of copyright material and other internet skills to develop this captivating intellectually compelling and entertaining, substantive web resource.

Their efforts brought them a First Place distinction.

We will be receiving color printers, microscopes, digital video camera ; and scanner to enhance our lab. I would appreciate your reviewing this site since I am certain it would be an important link for you to share with the visitors to ED's Oasis.

Please let me know how you might use the site for your audience. We look forward to receiving the reviews of our lesson plan and to hearing your reaction to our award winning project.

Dear Jeremiah:
Thank you for your most encouraging reflective comments on our project.

A project must be true to its inspiring essence and so whether or not it actually conforms to outside preset parameters is impossible to determine or to reconfigure for.

However, in light of the mission of Ed's Oasis which is the celebration and dissemination of excellent resources on the web, I am confident you will share our Microsoft ArtiFAQ 2100, which is a paradism of internet academic, artistic, and audience engaging excellence. Its content, theme, format and versatility make it an excellent model site as well as an interesting resource in and of itself. I look forward to hearing from you to find out how Eds Oasis can publicize this valuable construct with its broad audience of teachers, administrators and curriculum developers. Best regards,
Steve
