This project was developed in collaboration with Ovation TV ArtsZone. The students have the opportunity to view Codex Comes Home program and were inspired to start journal diaries. These diaries parallelled natural effects of observation causal factors. Computer Graphics teacher Mr. Feld points out to the significance of Leonardo's Bird For example if there is no rain, birds react in a particular fashion. This journal style entry which examines cause and effect relationships, is much like Leonardo did in the Codex Notebook. Bill Gates, CEO of MicroSoft bought the original manuscript and published its contents on a CD ROM which translated the original Italian Language into English through an easy to read browser window. There are also animated drawings which bring to life many of Leonardo's inventions. After viewing video, students expressed themselves through writings and artwork.

Abi's Observation

Yesterday was, for the most part just another regular day of school until something out of the ordinary happened.

I noticed there were many girls who had on the same shirt. This particular shirt of course was very unique in style, color and design. I also noticed many of these girls were together. I was wondering what this was all about. Were they in a club, or something of that sort?

Later that day I noticed these girls outside the gym while a basketball game was being played inside. I then thought to myself, what was going on? I realized while inside the gym maybe they were performers.

Little did I know that I was right in my hypothesis. They came into the gym during half-time and they turned out to be the new high school step team. This was a new and unusual observation for me, but also very enjoyable!!

Kelechi's Commentary

My trip to Nigeria was nurturing. I got to see where my family came from. I am the only member of my family born in America.

The weather is very hot in Nigeria. It will not rain until the summer. The conditions are harsh.

The people who live in the village are extremely poor. There is no money to fix the roads or clean the streets. I feel the harsh conditions make the people stronger.

They are very religious people and do not take school or their education lightly.

I enjoyed the food. I ate alot of rice, beans, platanos and potatoes. I gained 7 pounds while over there. They eat very well.

When I came back from Nigeria, I was very happy to see America. I would not like to live there.

I called my friend as soon as I came home.
He informed me that I have won the Arts Connection scholarship for my picture I had created for the ArtsZone's Miho Museum ProjectKelechi's Forest ARTS CONNECTION WINNER.

At first, I did not believe him, but he wasn't joking!

I am really excited about the news because I have never won something big like this before.

Micheal's Mom

Two weeks ago my mother got very ill and was taken to the hospital. A week later the hospital released her and sent her home. On the that same day Regent Exams were being given, due to this all the freshmen had the week off. So since I was home all week

I started to help my mother since she was so weak and still ill. By doing this me and my mother had alot of fun and also created a bond that was closer than the bond before. When she told my father how helpful I have been my father gave me some money to spend on myself.

The cause in this story is that I had the week off from school so I helped my sick mother with her plans. The effect is that my mother and myself got to know each little better.

Leah's Lenses

Inspired by Leonardo's vision of himself as Mona, Leah portrays herself as Lisa.

Teneisha's Tale

On November 21 1998 I migrated from the island of Jamaica to the United States. At first it seemed so far away from home. I did not know for sure if I wanted to stay here. It was far different from Jamaica.

On the morning of my tenth day, I went to work with my mother and I met Susan who was the daughter of my mom's co-worker. She was off from school that day. Fortunately for me, I had not started school yet.

She was there with my mom working and with eight hours ahead of me, what would I do to make the time go by?

We were introduced to each other.

At first were were hesitant to speak to one another, but with nothing to do, we had no choice but to get aquainted.

We started talking to each other when we met at the copy machine.

We started exchanging words and from that moment on we did not stop talking or leave each other's side for the day. We discovered we were both from Jamaica!

Until this day we are still corresponding. She was my first friend and has become my best friend.

Two Poems by Teneisha
The Spring Garden

In the Sweet smelling Garden
of this beautiful Spring,
Where in the distance Spring,
you hear Birds chirping and singing,
Daffodils blooming
The Duckling quack
The rolling of thunder
When the lightning flash
pitter, pitter, pitter, patter
The Sounding of the raindrops,
to keep those roses blooming fresh
And the scent of the garden making you
want to roll and stretch
The Lights of the Night

The bright moon Light
That Shines on this very night
Sends a Special Glow
Just for us to show.
How much we both know
What life is like without
An angel to flow.
