HOW TO USE WEB SITE GUESTBOOKS

Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling?:

Challenge the students to review the varied comments elicited by this web site which poses the question "Why is the Mona Lisa smiling?" and offers two different perspectives as to the identity of Mona Lisa. Students can use this question as a creative writing prompt and develop their own fictional narratives, reflections, drama, or poetry responses for online submission.

The guest-book for this particular site also features links to student responses that mix art and the written word, using morphing, computer graphics and drawing software. Students can create their own visual or visual-and-text narratives to this prompt including storyboarded animations, quick picks movies, slide shows, and even online animations with Da Vinci "himself' providing commentary. Their guest-book comments can mix words and images.

Since the Mona Lisa guest-book includes a broad spectrum of visitors-artists, researchers, educators, children, plumbers, and so on, students may want to write a report analyzing the responses by age, group, comment, and inquiry.

Students may also wish to go through the guest-book to identify a particular comment they would like to react to or an individual who, by description, is someone they would like to be in touch with. Challenge them to send an e-mail to that individual and/or to write a response for the guest-book which reacts to another visitor's comment.
