Kenneth Harvey, Principal
John F. Kennedy High School
99 Terrace View Avenue
Bronx, NY 10463
July 2, 2001

Dear Mr. Harvey,

I am writing to share appreciation of Mr. Steve Feld, who serves your district as a computer graphics instructor at John F. Kennedy High School, and is serving as the Webdesigner for the Brooklyn TEC Watch Alliance. Launched June 25th by the Honorable Major R. Owens (11th Congressional District), Dr Edison O. Jackson, president of Medgar Evers College, and the Education Technology Think Tank, this Alliance seeks to promote information sharing and to develop technology-based partnerships for education and economic empowerment. The Website will become a central mechanism to achieve our goals.

We became aware of Steve through the award winning work of his John F. Kennedy High School students on the Thinkquest site. We are so pleased that a committed educator who understands the power of the Web for youth and community would help us develop our Website.

We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Steve and in appreciation of his selfless efforts, we will seek to involve John F. Kennedy Highschool students and staff in some of our resource sharing programs. One example: we are targeting your school to be recipients of Techfoundation's donated refurbished computers.

Another opportunity we would like to provide an invitation to you and your superintendent to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Education Braintrust program convened by Congressman Major Owens September 28-29, 2001 in D.C. We would enjoy having you and Dr. Norman M. Wechsler join @40 other superintendents from around the country - all of whom will receive congressional recognition with a TEC Champion Award, presented by Congressman Owens at the Saturday Decision Maker's Luncheon. Formal invitations will be issued in the near future.

Until we speak, I remain

Yours in synergy,
Dr Ronnie B. Lowenstein

Congratulations on your wonderful accomplishments shared with the outstanding students of John F. Kennedy High School. I recommend that you visit the Verizon Foundation website (www.verizon.com/foundation) and submit an on-line application no later than mid-October. Although I'm not responsible for grants in the Bronx, our priorities at bridging the digital divide are the same and your description of the work sounds on target. If you'd like to schedule a site visit, please generate an e-mail to the Bronx manager in October (address right off of the Foundation website).

Best of everything at JFK and with TEC Watch - great initatives!

Steve--

I am sorry for not corresponding sooner. Right after we left Brooklyn, I traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska for a week and just got back this week. I wanted to thank you for the effort you put in to make the event such a success. The whole day exceeded my expectations.

I also appreciate you taking pictures of the event. As a presenter, we did not have the opportunity to chronicle the event via camera or video. Would it be possible for you to e-mail or snail-mail them to me? I would like to be able to access and possibly use them for our website/newsletter.

Please feel free to contact me to further discuss this matter. Thanks again for your time and consideration. Take care.
Best regards,

Dear Steve,

I just wanted to let you know that we are still working on establishing a link to your wonderful web site. Makale is away till Monday, and I will talk with her then. Our learning curve has been a little slow, but we are now able to do that pretty easily.

Creating Interactive Web Sites

Presented by Steve Feld
Computer Graphics Instructor
John F. Kennedy High School
(718) 562 5500 ext 464
sjfeld@erols.com

The workshop will demonstrate and explore the ways in which students can use the rich resources, capacities, fluencies and tools of our digital multimedia world, in service of responding to, analyzing, creating and participating in the arts. Specifically, the John F. Kennedy High School student art research centered web sites, will be presented in detail.

Objectives
1. To demonstrate the ways in which the Internet can be used as a research tool to facilitate art learning.

2. To explore how students can tap digital technology capacities and web design for reflection on art products and processes.

3. To actively engage students in creating, participating and contributing to the arts through technology.

Vocabulary:
Science Inquiry - process by which theories from differing perspectives are compared and contrasted from which conclusions can be drawn.

Morf - an animation technique which presents a blending of two images.

Link - web page mechanism where a line of text or image will lead to another page or to another web site with a mouse click.

Key Questions
1. In what ways can technology help us to examine and reflect on the identity of Leonardo's Mona Lisa?

2. How can Internet research resources, particularly museums, be used to create web sites that examine art history?

3. How can students express their responses to works of art using the vehicle of web page design?

Learning Standards addressed
1. Students will actively engage in the process that constitute creation and performance in the arts.
2. Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of materials and resources available for participating in the arts.
3. Responding to and analyzing works of art.

This workshop provides an introduction into the organizing principals of two key web resources.

Dear Steve,

Thanks so much for this. It is an honor to be so favorably received by YOU as I know so well how high your standards are!

There is much more in queue to put up on site, and as you heard through email to advisors/board, we are meeting next week . Upmost on the list is applying for funds for WaterRoots. We are applying for Milagro Foundation. If you think of any other relatively easy funds to go for, I sure would appreciate hearing.

In the meantime, private donations keep the project up and running.

Fondly,

Deborah
