International Child Art Foundation

Ashfaq Ishaq wrote:

Dear Mr. Steve Feld:

Greetings! A new year is ideal time to think of new ways to benefit the children of the world.

It is my great pleasure and honor to invite you to join the International Advisory Board of the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) responsible for overseeing the development of a Virtual Creativity Playground (VCP) for children.

A Washington, DC based nonprofit, ICAF's vision is to bring about a "ChildArt & Creativity Revolution" that will have a significant local, national and global impact on education and children's contribution.

Already a world leader in children's art and creativity programs, exhibitions and festivals, ICAF publishes the "ChildArt" magazine and operates the ChildArt Gallery in DC. More than one million children in 86 countries participated in our last global art creation program. Children and representatives from 50 countries participated in our last children's festival on the National Mall and our first International Summit on Children's Creativity. We have partnerships in over 70 countries with ministries of education and culture, national museums and arts organizations, and several First Ladies and U.S. Governors serve on our ChildArt & Creativity Board.

The VCP - a digital playground for children - will broaden the Internet benefits from the present "information and education" stage to the expected "creativity and production" stage for children.

The Advisory Board Members will have the opportunity to contribute their own ideas for the VCP and approve other ideas. Board Members are expected to devote only 2 to 3 days (even on weekends) to the VCP during the entire year 2001. Board Members will also participate in ICAF's second "International Summit on Children's Creativity" which will be held in June/July 2002 during our International ChildArt & Creativity Festival. The summit is being co-organized with the Center of Studies in Creativity, Buffalo, New York.

I look forward to your response and would be delighted to send you further information on ICAF and the VCP.

May 2001 be the best year ever for you and your family.

Sincerely,

Ashfaq Ishaq, PhD, FRSA

Dear Steve-

I learned about your work from the upcoming Museums and the Web 2001 conference. I am fascinated by your experience as teenage animator and your current work as a computer graphics leader. Congratulations on leading your students to win the NY State Learning Technology Grand Championship three times.

I strongly believe that the Virtual Creativity Playground (VCP) needs the guidance and support of creative professionals. I know a little bit about Thinkquest and am happy to note your involvement in one of their projects.

Incidentally, the upcoming issue of our ChildArt magazine, which focuses on one theme per issue, will be on "Art & Technology." I don't know if we still need any articles, or whether you would be interested in writing for ChildArt, still I am attaching a "petition" and can confirm where we are with the magazine on Tuesday. I am also attaching my own bio for you.

Meanwhile, best wishes for a very happy new year.

Dear Steve:

Thank you for sending this newsletter. this is a really excellent idea. It sounds as though you never run out of good ideas in connection with your website--I wish my computer could hear music, but even without that, I always enjoyed the many links and creative ideas that you have posted. Keep up this really fine work. (Do you have any collaborations with the Louvre and the Metropolitcan Museum of Art?) Since your website is accessible all over the world, it would be good to outreach everywhere there is an interest in art.

Best of luck.

Dear Mark: Thanks for your interest and for sharing our media event with the Chancellor. Here is the page we created for the project. /13681/data/links/anartica.htm

Ann and Liv will be calling our school at 1:30, but the CNN crew will also be profiling my students at 10 A.M.

Thanks again!

Subject: Ann/Liv call Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 23:57:36 -0500 From: Liz liz@habermaninc.com To: sjfeld@erols.com

Steve, I'm terribly sorry I've been out of touch. If you've been following the expedition as closely as you normally do, you know that this is a very important stretch of time. Ann and Liv are scheduled to reach the Pole today (within hours, actually).

Due to this development, Ann and Liv wouldn't be able to make the call to your classroom on Wednesday. I'm EXTREMELY sorry about this continued delay. Please bear with us (Ann, Liv, me + our expedition team) and CNN. We are all committed to making this happen, but are obviously having a problem nailing a date that will work until after the South Pole.

Please confirm you've received this, and let me know whether you're able to take a call next week.

Thank you for understanding and being patient. This will work!

Steve, are you the teacher of the computer graphics class at Kennedy H.S. that's involved with the Bancroft-Arnesen Expedition? I'm a reporter with American Teacher newspaper and doing a piece on the expedition. I'm looking for AFT teacher-members who are using this remarkable trip as basis for some aspect of their educational/classroom activities. Are you a member? Would you mind making a statement about how your class is using this expedition? [In what way is your class trying to emulate Ann's and Liv's journals and comparing them to Leonardo DaVinci's?] Just something brief would be terrific. If you'd rather talk it, I can be reached at 202/393-5661... on Friday, Jan. 26. But if you can e-mail it, that would be terrific, too.
Thanks so much for your cooperation.

American Teacher

Dear Prisilla:
Yes, I am indeed the computer graphics teacher at John Kennedy High School in the Bronx who is involved with the Bancroft-Arnesen Expedition.

I am also a member of the AFT through the NYC/UFT and receive American Teacher regularly.

My classes have been tracking Ann and Liv's journey and reading their journals.

Initially they compared and contrasted the style and format of these 21st Century womens' journals to those of Leonardo, the 16th Century futurist and explorer, but as they continued to follow online, they integrated 21st Century perspectives, computer graphics and online communication capacities by: posing their own questions for the explorers, inspired by their own perspectives; and creating digital artwork prompted by the journals.

Since my students are involved with their ongoing ThinkQuest web site, Learning About Leonardo, they quickly placed these questions on a page: Our Artic Exploration Arts Goals and Dreams - An Antartica Expedition Connection. /13681/data/links/anartica.htm

They have further designed a Powerpoint presentation of their Antartica visions.

We are presently awaiting a phone call from the explorers to our classroom, which will be covered through a live satellite broadcast by CNN.

The students' fascination with this authentic proactive adventure and scientific expediton, has validated and enhanced their attainment of high standards - New Performance Language Arts Standards, and N.Y. State Science and Technology Standards.

For further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Warmest regards,
