To: sjfeld@erols.comHello Steve. We've had a crazy week at headquarters -- I'm assuming you've been following along, but Liv's sled was torn by razor-sharp terrain and they were forced to stop on Wed./Thurs. to fix this very serious problem. They are having a very difficult time on the Shackleton Glacier. CNN also had a busy week -- with White House shootings, etc.
Between Daryn Kagan and I, we've just now gotten back to planning activities for next week, and I'm sure you've left for the weekend. Daryn has not yet confirmed with her staff that it will indeed work for Monday, so we may need to postpone again. Am I right in assuming that Monday will probably not work for you because there wasn't enough advance notice? Be honest, and we'll make this work with your schedule somehow.
Ann and Liv are excited to talk with your students; and Zoe Ryan, our education director, is anxious to get you all to connect. Let me know what your thoughts are at this point.
I am working on getting Ann and Liv to sign the guest book!!

Hello everyone.
We have already filmed the Montel Williams show and are currently waiting to find out when this show on "bullies" will air. I will post this date on my web site as soon as it's known: http://hometown.aol.com/kthynoll
However, we are now looking for children/teens who are willing to go on another show. Miguel Sancho of CBS News show 48 Hours contacted me regarding a show on bullies they just started working on. I'm in charge of finding people who are interested and sending him their contact info.
If you are a parent with a child who is a victim, please let me know if you would be interested in having your information forwarded for possible inclusion in this show. If you are a teacher with students who are bullied, and can get permission from their parents for them to take part in this program, please forward me their contact info. as well.
Thanks so much,

To: sjfeld@erols.comDear Mr. Feld:
My mom and I were reading yourexpedition.com and visited your home page. I was amazed to see "History Day Project." My mom exclaimed: "It's you!" I did record CNN from 10:15-3:30 but I haven't had time to review the tape yet. I hope to see your class! Right now I am reading "Women of Courage" and an essay by Ann. Thank you so much for all you have done. I am looking forward to seeing the PowerPoint demonstration! I will keep you posted on my progress.
Although it may not be possible to come to Minnesota, my mom and I would still like to invite you and one of your students to the Ann Bancroft Awards Ceremony here in the Twin Cities on May 15 as a thank you for your help. It's a very inspiring program.

Subject: From the (Cracked but Still In One Piece) Sled - February 12, 2001
Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 12:19:06 -0500Last night, Ann and Liv slept on the Ross Ice Shelf! After 90 days of pulling, skiing, waiting for wind, portaging gear over glacial bolders, fixing broken sleds and equipment - Ann and Liv achieved their childhood dream! They are the first two women to cross the continent of Antarctica on skis.
Ann and Liv can't take much time to celebrate, the race is on! They have 10 days to cross about 485 miles (776 km) to reach the Sir Hubert Wilkins, the ship closing in on McMurdo to pick them up. If Ann and Liv can't get within helicopter range of "Sir Hubert", they will have to be rescued by a plane, a complicated (and expensive!) procedure. Antarctica "closes" around February 22. That's when the last ships leave McMurdo as the ice closes in and Antarctica's harsh, dark, and dangerously cold winter begins. But today is a day to celebrate. Ann and Liv thank the thousands of you who continue to follow their dream - and who have written amazing, inspirational messages (http://www.yourexpedition.com/bae_site_pages/letters.html) that have kept them energized to keep pulling even in the worst conditions. In yesterday's message from the ice, Liv relayed a special thanks to those of you who have supported Ann since the days of the American Womens' Expediton.
It all started on a beautiful, windless day on Queen Maud Land (http://www.yourexpedition.com/bae_site_pages/update11_13.html). Ann and Liv went to bed last night with no wind as they now face 485 miles of travel in the next 10 days. But they were camped next to Mount Speed, and that's got to be a good sign. For one last 10 day period, please dust off your wind dances and songs, blow on the bottom of the globe, or do whatever you think will put wind in Liv and Ann's sails!
One way to celebrate is to purchase an Expedition limited edition print or some of the new merchandise from the Expedition store (http://yourexpedition.mindframe.com/). There are several new items, and you can now purchase directly online from the store using your credit card! Thanks so much for your support!
Sincerely,
The Team at YourExpedition

Subject: Good news!/Ann + Liv can call soon!

From: Liz liz@habermaninc.com
To: sjfeld@erols.comSteve, I'm sure you've been reading the updates and know that we will make a decision Thursday morning about whether we will send a plane to pick up Ann and Liv. Again, please accept my apologies for not contacting you more often. It's been a very busy, emotional week!
Regardless of the decision we make, I'd like to move forward in scheduling a call for your students with Ann and Liv, perhaps as soon as Friday. If Friday is not good, how about Monday? We'll do whatever works best for your class. Please let me know.
Unfortunately, CNN will not film the call. I hope this does not disappoint your students. CNN has had to cut back staff people and change the way they do reporting due to a recent merger with AOL, and they are unable to cover this story. However, we may work to get other media there if time allows, but we will not change the schedule due to media. This is your special time with Ann and Liv. Are you and your administration still open to having media in your building?
Looking forward to your response.

To: sjfeld@erols.comHi Steve, hey would you mind if we worked your site in to a feature, I will contact you more in a week or so about it, I'll just need to ask a few questions. I am going to feature you under the teachers page. But I don't want to stereotype the neighborhood your in, you know, poor kids, big accomplishments because of you. OR would that be on the right track to follow for the piece.
Bill Allen
4kidssites.comDear Bill:
We are delighted that our site will be featured in the teachers section.
The site was created by inner-city youth using 15 year old computers.
I feel the truth will help dispel the stereotypes about poor kids and limited technology; but there are other approaches/tracks to follow, if you prefer.
The article mentioned in the newsletter explains how we are dissolving digital divides of geography and language, while the following article describes the site from the perspective of teachers' needs. /13681/data/drama/skewl.htm
Thank you for your support and we look forward to answering any other questions you may have.

Subject: CyberSurfari Outposts - Congratulations!

From: kmason@cybersurfari.org
To: sjfeld@erols.comCongratulations, Steve!
Your site, Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling?, has been chosen as an Outpost for CyberSurfari Spring 2001! Thanks for visiting our site to fill out the outpost form. Now it is time for the second step! We ask that you write a clue directing our players to an interesting bit of information on your site. We will post the clue with a link to your site. Please send us your clue, the answer and URL where the answer can be found no later than March 1st. When constructing your clue, remember:
· Your clue should lead to a specific piece of information three to five logical clicks into your site. Remember we will ask you to create a text link from the answer to an html file we will send to you about a week before the contest begins. Visit http://www.cybersurfari.org/ and click on “Sign-Up & Tips” then, “Practice” to view some samples. Have fun with it...poems and other creative clues are appreciated!
· Please ensure the answer can only be found in ONE PLACE within your site. (This cuts down confusion for players who stumble onto the answer that is not linked.)
· Try to incorporate key words from your site into the clue that will lead the player to the answer.
· Remember that the clue will have to remain linked until June 15th, so please be sure the answer is somewhere that will not be impossible to find should you rearrange your site before then.
. When you send your clue, please include:
- The text of your clue
- The answer to your clue (should be a word, number or small phrase, etc.) It will be hot linked to a treasure code page we send to you in March.
- The URL where the answer can be found on your site
CyberSurfari is a cooperative program. We ask that you mention your participation in this program in newsletters, press releases and any other forms of promotion you do through your site whenever possible. Contact me for sample press releases and e-mail blasts. As of Friday, we will have new graphics, which we encourage you to download and add to your site, and link to us – the more the merrier! The graphics can be found at: http://www.cybersurfari.org/promos.htm
We will be in touch periodically until the launch on March 23rd. But, for planning purposes please know that we will send your unique treasure page about a week before the contest launch for posting on March 21st (It is very easy and specific instructions will accompany the page).
Please email me back at this email address with any questions or call 410-647-2111. Again, thanks for participating in this worthwhile program!
Sincerely,

From: Liz liz@habermaninc.com
To: sjfeld@erols.comSteve, thanks for your feedback on our site and your enthusiasm for digital storytelling. It's a passion of ours, and we'd love for you to join us. I'll be able to think more about it after the expedition it over!! Sigh.
Ann and Liv are sailing home, and they will be in New York March 12-14. I'm wondering if you and your students could possibly attend an incredible event where you all could meet Ann and Liv, ask your questions/take photos + video and get some media exposure for your incredible work. Here's the scoop:
We're having a news conference on Monday, March 12. We're inviting a ton of media from New York to hear a short presentation by Ann and Liv. Then, we're going to invite students (your class if you can come and some younger students who have followed the expedition) to ask questions and perhaps make short presentations of how they followed the expedition in their classrooms. (This may be an opportunity for you all to show the Web site and your powerpoint presentation. (Can't promise that just yet because we don't know that technology we'll have, but it's a possibility.)
This event would be an excellent opportunity for your students to interact with Ann and Liv and, like I said, get some media exposure. We'll hopefully have the nightly news crews there, etc.
The event begins around 11:30 a.m. with lunch. Then it's followed by the news conference, which begins around 12:45 p.m. I know the time is not ideal, and it requires you and your students to be away from school, but the event is really going to be wonderful. We're displaying pictures and examples of how kids all over the world have followed Ann and Liv. Your kids could see how they were part of a worldly network of kids that participated. I will check to see if we can help arrange transportation for your group to the event, which is taking place at the Scandinavia House, 56 Park Ave. We would encourage you to bring Debbie and your principal (the Shackleton fan!).
If this does not work out, I will look into arranging a visit to your school.
Let me know.
