    EARTH LIGHTS
    ------------

    This is really really cool!
Check the link below... This is really a sight to behold!

The image is a panoramic view of the world from the new space station. It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas.

You can scroll East-West and North-South. Note that Canada's population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border. Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries.

Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent". After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the density of Japan.

What a piece of photography. It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth taken from the Boeing built Space Station last November on a perfect night with no obscuring atmospheric conditions.

    LEONARDO BRIDGE BUILT IN NORWAY
    ----------------------------------

Vebjørn Sand hopes to build the Leonardo Bridge on every continent. We are working at the moment on a possible project in New York City. There is a pedestrian overpass at Liberty Street near Ground Zero which needs to be replaced. We think the Leonardo bridge would be a wonderful symbol for that area of our ability to create "bridges" of beauty in the midst of chaos.

How could it be night all over the Earth at the same time?

Dear Doug,
That's a good question, and here is the answer. As a photographer, I've experimented with slit-scan photography which is the technique employed here.

How it works.
I photographed a person spinning slowly on a piano stool. The person's axis was photographed through a slit opening of the matte box, no wider than 1 or 2 mm.

Here is the hard part.
While the time-lapse is being photographed, the film in the 35mm camera is being rewound using a motor, which is turning at the same speed as the turning piano stool.

Results:
A flat geomorphic projection of the human face. Razor sharp points of light can be achieved with perfect synchronization.

I am certain the NASA scientists used this technique, since the whole picture of the Earth is flattened.

So you see, it is only night where the slit is. As the process continues, the next section is photographed when it becomes night.

Pretty neat trick.

Sincerely,
Steve

Dear Steve,

Thanks for stopping by our site to fill out the outpost signup form! We are happy to include your site, Learning About Leonardo, in the upcoming CyberSurfari launching on February 22nd.

Please send in your clues to me ASAP, but no later than Wednesday, February 6th. All clues will be sent out for publishing on our sponsors' websites by the 8th, so I would like a couple days to review. Here are some guidelines for creating a great clue:

-- Visit http://www.cybersurfari.org and click on "Play Now" and then on any one of the CyberStations to view some sample clues if you are stuck. Have fun with it...poems and other creative clues are appreciated!

-- The contest will run from February 22nd - May 10th. So if your site changes often, try to lead them somewhere where the players will be able to find the answer throughout the duration of the contest. If that is limited to an archive, that's fine, send them in that direction.

We also ask that you mention your participation in this program in newsletters, press releases and any other forms of promotion you do through your site whenever possible. Contact me for sample press releases and e-mail blasts. We will be in touch periodically until the launch on February 22nd. But, for planning purposes please know that we will send your unique treasure page no later than February 15th for posting on February 20th (It is very easy and specific instructions will accompany the page).

Again, thanks for participating in this worthwhile program! Please email me back at this email address with any questions.

Sincerely,
Katy Mason

Steve,

I want you to know that your site is one of my favorites of all time.

I love your page on the music, in particular. However I have never been able to get it to play.

I am a disability advocate and I love the different ways you have conveyed the message "The Music is Playing"

Come visit our site www.icdri.org sometime.

Sincerely,

Mike Burks
Webmaster and Public Information Officer

I will get a resource page up as soon as possible....I use this site all the time in teaching classes.

Thank you again!

Sincerely,

Mike Burks

Dear Mike, Thank you for your kind words about our site and for your encouragement.

I'm not sure why you are having difficulty hearing the music but here is a page which might help resolve the problem.

/13681/data/links/musihelp.htm

The primary focus of the site was to make it accessible to all, especially those visitors with sight and hearing impairment. Here is an article which addresses this issue: /13681/data/learn/fax2.htm

I visited ICDRI.ORG and we are in complete alignment with your mission. We would be delighted if you linked to us from your Art and Music section.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards.
Steve Feld
