Mona Lisa Bridge in Oslo Norway

Münsterländische Tageszeitung
The Universal Genius

Why should one report, when a pedestrian bridge is to be built over a highway? This happens all over Europe and is no special purpose or a very high standard for an architect.

But such a bridge is under construction now, north of Oslo (Norway), that makes headlines in special science magazines. This has to do with the blueprint architect, and he has probably one of the best names in this business: Leonardo da Vinci.

In 1502 the universal genius from Italy has designed an exact calculated

stone bridge via the Golden Horn in Constantinople (Istanbul), that has never been realized. The plans slept in an archive, where the Norwegian- Finnish architect Tarja Koskinen* has uncovered them and applied for the realization to the authorities.

The astonished authorities of the supervision of construction checked Leonardo's plans, and decided that they are absolutely practicable. Now the inhabitants of As - north of Oslo - are pleased to have a first ranking attraction: Who on earth has a construction site sign with the inscription: Design: L. da Vinci

Dear Paul,
Thank you for the lead about the Mona Lisa Bridge and for thinking of us. You can find your citation and a link to a photo of the Mona Lisa Bridge, posted on our site in 1998, on our November Nova. /13681/data/millennium/nova.htm

It would be wonderful if you could send a copy of the Newspaper clipping to us.

I presented the Leonardo site to the NYC Art Teachers Association today and the workshop was a big hit, as indicated by our guestbook comments.

Best personal regards.
Steve

Universal genie

Dear Steve:

Thank you so much for your interest in the Norwegian Leonardo Project. It has been exciting to see the interest this wonderful project has generated.

I read with interest the German article. It has a mistake which needs to be corrected. Tarja Koskinen was not the project leader. She was a part of the architectural team which created the plans and elevations for the Norwegian Leonardo Project. It was Norwegian artist, Vebjørn Sand, who saw the original Leonardo drawing and took the idea to the Norwegian Transportation Ministry. Tarja is an extremely talented architect and an important member of the Leonardo Project team.

I would like to send you a catalog and brochure on the Norwegian Project for your students. Can I address it just to John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx? What is the zip code?

Vebjørn Sand hopes to build the Leonardo Bridge on every continent. We are working at the moment on a possible project in New York City. There is a pedestrian overpass at Liberty Street near Ground Zero which needs to be replaced. We think the Leonardo bridge would be a wonderful symbol for that area of our ability to create "bridges" of beauty in the midst of chaos. What do your students think of that idea? The Battery Park City Authority are responsible for the site and we are just in the very preliminary stages of discussions with them. We would love to get your student's opinions about the project in New York since we would ALL be involved.

Vebjørn Sand is in NYC at the Art Students League. Would you be interested in having him speak to your students? I would be happy to arrange that if you like.
All the best,
