Steve,

Good to hear from you and congratulations on a fine project. I think it is a better idea to make your site one of our feature stories in next week's edition and this is what we shall do. I hope in turn you will encourage students to visit Global Museum on a regular basis and use it as a regular source of museum and cultural based information.

best wishes
Roger

Dear Steve,

I am so glad that you liked the review I wrote. It means a great deal to me that you felt it was worthy of the work that this team of people have put in.

I would be glad to do any follow up writing for you and these students.

Thanks for posting a segment on the September Springboard for me. I appreciate it!

I hope that your students can grasp how awesome I think their work is from the article. Congrats to all of you.:)

Hi Steve

I will not be updating my site for a few days but I will look over your sites then. I did take a quick look.. real impressive. I will add it to the teachers resources and possibly other places. like my fun page etc.

As a former inner city GED instructor (BOston), it is my pleasure to review the sites.

Hopefully you and your students will also use my site.

I try and add to it weekly but my home business (sellling crafts and Jewish items) have had a rush the last two weeks after I placed an ad in a national Jewish magazine. I placed 4 quarterly ads first two were duds. but it looks like I will make back my ads or be close.. Everyone is ordering new Yarmulkas for the high holidays .. so I should be back to editing my educational site soon.

Thanks for writing.

Steve - this is absolutely one of the coolest web sites I've seen. I love the morphing Mona Lisa and the hands that sign for the hearing impaired. Please congratulate your students on an excellent job. I am forwarding your e-mail to our Executive Director, Ana Sisnett, with my hearty recommendation that we link it to our youth page. Thanks so much for bringing your site to our attention.

Who says 15 year old computers without hard drives are useless relics? A group of savvy students at John F. Kennedy High School in Kingsbridge used the "dinosaur" technology to design their own Web Site and has won this years Beyond 2000 sponsored by the Board of Education, the Mayor's Office and Microsoft.

The Bronx students took home the top prize for their Web Site "Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling?" winning Kennedy High five color printers, nine electronic microscopes and a digital camera.

Alberto Bernabel, Alfy Noboa, Felix Tejada, Daniel Mena and Victor Duran created the site.

The web site argues that the famous painting is actually a self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, a theory first floated by graphic artist and lecturer Lillian Schwartz in her 1992 book, The Computer Artist's Handbook. The site includes a digitally reproduced segment of a composition written by da Vinci and detailed information on Leonardo's Horse", a 24 foot high equine clay model for a planned bronze statue. The model was destroyed in 1499 by the French archers.

This project began as an art project", said Kennedy High Computer teacher Steve Feld, "and it evolved into a web site with worldwide interest."

SCHOOLWORLD NEWSLETTER
No. 6/2000

********************************
Other News: A letter from member teacher Steve Feld, now here's a site worth visiting:

ArtiFAQ 2100 is a highly interative student centered futurist focused web site. It compliments the theme of Schoolworld in that it engages teens in analyzing Art History past, political and sociological trends in the near future -- 2100. The Future Gallery offers students peer models of artistically rendered glimpses and verbally described predictions. Among the issues touched on are: Urban Studies, Biodiversity, Communications, Multicultural Diversity and Global Understanding.

ArtiFAQ 21OO is designed to predict how art will influence our lives in the next hundred years. Through probing past Art inspirations and scientific methods students can use available data to make reasonable forecasts for a preferrable future. Solving our challenging quiz will give you access to the Future Art Gallery.

Through our partnership with FluidArts, my students use technology to begin dissolving digital divides of geography and language. They successfully translated Estonian eWorksheets into Spanish, and the Virtual Africa River Festival into Spanish and Russian. Please visit /13681/data/nyc

We would be delighted if our site were considered for the upcoming issue of the Schoolworld Short Links edition Newletter. We look forward to your response. Thank you for your consideration and continued support.

Warm regards,

Dear Steve,

Thanks for your prompt response and the awesome clue! Whew! It's a toughie! I'm thinking it's a bit TOO tough for the regular contest. We are doing a bonus round for the Fall contest and I would love to use your clue for that. Is this okay? If you are up for it, I'd love it if you could come up with an additional one, and a little easier for the regular contest.

What do you think?

Thanks again for your enthusiasm!

Sincerely,
Katy

Hi Steve,
The project sounds fantastic! I'll be happy to check it out, and if it's even half as good as it sounds I'll be happy to link to it. In fact, I'd probably make a special link on my Duchamp page at http://www.freshwidow.com/duchamp-aug96.html, as it is the most visited page on my site. I'll put it into my regular links page as well. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I will certainly look these sites over with an eye for creating links and also possible inclusion in the lesson plans for my computer students at Rota High School http://www.gtepacifica.net/community/rhs How did you come up with our address at lutatech.com? (Please notice spelling) "Luta" is the traditional name for the Island of Rota. The westernized name of Rota was given by the Spanish who apparently had trouble hearing the native name correctly or perhaps had difficulty pronouncing the beginning L sound.

Steve,

Interesting! At first when I saw "John F. Kennedy High School", I thought that was why you were emailing me (because I went to a different "John F. Kennedy High School" in NJ). But then I saw you emailed to webmaster@kom.com, so it wasn't to me personally. Then I saw your site about Lillian Schwartz. She's a friend of mine, and I work with her at Bell Labs in Murray Hill! I'll definately add a link to your site as soon as I get a chance.
