Our Artic Exploration

Arts Goals and Dreams - An Antartica Expedition Connection

Leonardo da Vinci used his journals to explore and to go beyond the parameters of existing knowledge and experiences.

He set goals for himself. He worked methodically and inventively to achieve his dreams. As part of that process, he created a core of journal entries which include observation, reflections and inventions that speak to us in the 21st century Like Leonardo, explorers Liv and Ann have set goals for themselves. They seek to build on and to expand the existing body of knowledge. They, too recognize that the keeping of journals offer a concrete record for the artist, explorer and inventor.

Furthermore, such journal can serve to inspire not only their authors; but also a broad spectrum of readers, followers, to pursue their own goals and objectives. Readers can be inspired to further study the topics and experiences detailed in the journals.

Indeed, just as Leonardo's journals prompted questions, inquiry and study, so too, do these journals of two modern day Leonardo-spirited female explorers evoke reflections, dreams and visions.

As a result of following Ann and Liv through their journals and daily visits to the Your Expedition Web Site, the Kennedy community, particularly the computer graphics students, extend their warmest holiday greetings to the explorers Liv and Ann. The Kennedy students feel that the most sincere form of tribute to these two Leonardo-spirited pioneers is a series of questions addressed to them which demonstrate the ways in which they serve as modern day Leonardo-styled role models for youth, women and girls in this New Millennium .

The Kennedy Computer Graphics students resolve to emulate Leonardo and your expedition.com explorers vision setting and fulfilling goals, dreams and objectives.

We look forward to the successful completion of your mission in 2001 !

Alfy

Alfy: 1. As I was looking at the visitor comments to your site, I noticed that many of them do not detail your expedition; but rather offer words of encouragement. Sometimes visitors to your site ask questions which are already answered in your journals. Do you look forward to reading comments everyday? Do you set aside a special time of the day for them?

CAMEOS

ALFY:
I have been following the expedition for over a month. Each day I come into class an review Ann and Livs progress by reading their journals. I am fascinated by the concept of female explorers as futurists and heroines for the 21st Century.

As I read about the fridgid cold experienced by the explorers I created a tipping bucket of ice for the Champagne of their celebration when the mission is completed.

DIOS:
I like to write poetry. That's the way I best respond to information. As I've been following the mission, possible lyrics for a narrative poem have been coming to me. I hope to put these together in a finished poem to share with Ann and Liv.

KUN KIM:
As I followed the expedition with its various dangerous and tense moments I wondered whether during those crisis if Liv and Ann clung together and became tight, as only women can? Did they start gobbling chocolate and talk about their old boyfriends?

I served as the sounding board for the other students. I helped prepare, advise and critique their work, as the Powerpoint presention was assembled.

CRUZ SANTIAGO:
I am the geographer of our group. I enjoy tracking the explorers. Whenever I go home each night I would mark their progress off on a map, at home and report back to the team in the morning. I will be sorry to see that it ends. Ann and Liv put in their own their own feelings, favorite foods and movies to their journals. I really felt I was getting to know them as friends. Leonardo's Codex is much more distant. He is the scientific observer. We do not get to know his food favorites or facts about his personal life.

SARA:
As a female, I followed Liv and Ann to see what two courageous women whose actions can set an example for me to follow. They demonstrate for me that women today can redefine the boundaries of excellence to go beyond gender and to include adventures in the equation.

ABDUL NDADI:
I had the pleasure of putting together the various Artic themed pictures inspired by the mission, created by the students in my computer graphics class, into a Powerpoint presentation.

The titles include poetry authored by Alejandra.

ALEJANDRA
I too am a poet. As I followed the mission to the South Pole and beyond, I penned the poems which are part of the Powerpoint presentation.
