Riddlers Choice Award May 26, 1998

Congratulations are in order for your team! Your site, "Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling," has been chosen to receive the Riddler's Choice award, for its promotion of learning and creativity on the web. You can pick up the award image at the following URL:
http://www.riddler.com/images/ridchoicecoin.gif
We are not in the practice of giving away many awards these days, but your site is informative, well-designed, and (one of the key elements we look for) a fun place to hang out on the web! I loved being able to send postcards to my friends in Holland (without embarrassing myself with my poor Dutch). And although I've heard a theory similar to that of Lillian Schwartz, your animated morph closes the book on the issue for me! Please be sure and congratulate every member of your team for a job well done.
Thanks,
Stacey Peters

The Gateway to Educational Materials Project
To: sjfeld@erols.com
Dear Steve,
Thank you for directing us to your site. It looks really great -- your students did a wonderful job.
I think that your da Vinci resource would be a great addition to another project we have here at the Information Institute of Syracuse.
The Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) project is a consortium effort with the mission of providing an easy "one stop, any stop" access to educational materials on the Internet. GEM is a project of the U.S. Department of Education's National Library of Education and the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology.
GEM got its start when officials from the Department of Ed realized two things. First, while there is an enormous amount of high-quality educational information on the Internet, it is scattered -- teachers don't always know where to go to find creative ideas for instruction. Second, existing searching technology (such as traditional search engines which scan documents for keywords) don't support the kind of searching teachers need to do -- to find lesson plans by grade level, by state standard, etc. GEM answers these needs.
GEM is building a digital library of Internet-based educational material. First, using GEMcat (cataloging software), catalogers create metadata for educational information distributed across the Internet (found on the Websites of various collection holders, such as AskERIC, Microsoft Encarta, and the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse). The metadata allows our harvest software to identify and organize the educational materials. GEM supplies training, training materials, and software for your catalogers, and cataloging is a fairly efficient process. Once the cataloger is familiar with the procedures, the minimal cataloging necessary normally takes about 10 minutes per lesson plan. Since you have only one resource, we would be happy to catalog "Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling?" for you.
The metadata allows our harvest software to identify and organize educational materials. The harvest then creates a master list (the Gateway) of pointers to educational materials. This is much like cards in a library catalog -- pointers to useful information. To see the Gateway for yourself, go to: www.thegateway.org
Collection holders do not pay a fee to participate in GEM. The key role of collection holders is cataloging and contributing their metadata records to The Gateway. No previous education in cataloging is required of your catalogers. GEM will supply trainers and training materials to prepare your staff for cataloging, and technical support (listserv, email address, 800#) is available for the users and collection holders of GEM.
If you are interested in joining the GEM project, we ask that you fill out the participation form, which can be found at:
http://www.geminfo.org/Participation/Applying/index.html
You have created a wonderful site. Let us help you share it with the world!
Regards,
The Gateway to Educational Materials Project

We've put it there because this is the busiest section of the website at the moment, but we may well repeat from other sections because, as we discussed, it has a wide range of uses!
