July 30, 1863
12:00 AM- Union cavalry, led by Gen. John
Buford, enters Gettysburg.
7:30 AM- Gen. Henry Heth, leader of a division
from the Army of North Virginia's 3 Corps, moves
to Gettysburg in search of shoes. Heth has no way
of knowing how Gettysburg is defended because the
Confederate cavalry, led by Jeb Stuart, is off
making raids on the Union army. Heth believes
Gettysburg is only protected by volunteers, but is
met by Union cavalry. Heth retreats, and Buford
sends a message to Gen. Meade, general of the Army
of the Potomac, telling him that there had been a
conflict at Gettysburg. Buford also added that he
thought Gettysburg would be a good place to fight
a battle. He also asks Gen. John Reynolds, leader
of the Army of the Potomac I Corps, for reinforcements.
