Being in the army is more boring than I could ever imagine. When I enrolled, I thought we would spend most of our time fighting. For the last few weeks we've done nothing but drill. We have little freedom, too. Our days are under a tight schedule, guided by the bugle and the drum, and my officers control everything I do. I have learned how to use and take care of my rifle, kindle a fire in the field, and pitch a tent, but what I want to do most is fight in a battle.
Almost every day, I play baseball or cards. Sometimes, I might watch a boxing match or write a letter to my parents. I've even gotten pretty good at sewing, so I can patch holes in my clothes.
