Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Wetland Management District

Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 450 National Wildlife establishment to protect, enhance, and restore the Nation's wildlife heritage. Covering 12, 383 acre, the Refuge is located on the western edge of the northern Great Plans, 50 miles east of the Rocky Mountains and 12 miles north of Great Falls, Montana. Despite its name, Benton Lake is actually a 5,000 acre shallow marsh created my the last continental glacier thousands of years ago.

Fort Assinnibonie Historic Site

Fort Assinniboine, the largest military post constructed in Montana, was established in 1879. Within four years, a stately, impressive complex of some one hundred brick, stone and wood buildings, was clustered around the parade ground overlooking the quiet meandering of Creek, and in the shadow of the beautiful Bear Paw Mountains. The buildings were surrounded my a vast military reservation of a hold million acres.

Kendall Historic Mining Community

For a few exciting years between 1901 and 1911, Kendall was a booming mining camp. It began in 1901, it's growth keeping pace with the development of the Kendall and Branes-King cyanide gold mills. By October of that year, it boasted 200 citizens and a post office. Permanent stone structures ad electric power apppeared in 1902 which seemed to ensure the town's future. By 1905, Kendall's population had grown to 1,000, peaking in early 1910 with 1,500 residents. By 1910, Kendall;s population was back to 200. Shortly after, the town went bust.

 

The Museum's Collection includes the most comprehensive accumulation of original Russell are work and personal objects to be found in any one place. In addition to Russell, visitors can enjoy the works of such artists as O.C. Seltzer, Joseph Sharp, E.I Couse, Winold Reiss, and Edward Curtis. The Browning Firearm Collection is a fine representation on the world's best firearm inventors.
