The sun is the closest star to Earth. Without it, there would be no life on Earth for the sun provides us with heat and light.
The sun has a diameter of 86,500,000 miles. That's equal to one hundred times the diameter of the Earth. It's mass is over 33,300 times the Earth's. The gravity is twenty eight times that of the Earth. That means if you weighed 100 pounds on Earth, you would weight 2,800 pounds (over a ton) on the sun!!! However you probably wouldn't get too much time to worry about your quick weight gain because you would vaporize as soon as you got close to the sun!!!!
The sun has a two layer atmosphere. The lower, thicker section is called the choromosphere. The name means color sphere and is pink. A spectacular feature is known as promineces. These are huge streams of gas that can reach heights of hundreds of thousands of miles. They create different shapes and loops. The inner, lower corona (meaning crown) is pearly white. It can't be seen from Earth except during eclipses or using a special telescope known as a corona-graph. It immitates the conditions during an eclipse.
HOT SUN SITES!!!
The surface of the sun is the deepest we can see. It is called the photosphere and is two hundred miles deep. Located there are sunspots. Sunspots are cooler and less bright areas of the sun. The appear and diappear in a sunspot cycle that repeats itself about every eleven years.
