Libra has come to represent justice. Once part of Scorpius, Libra has come to represent Hades' Golden Chariot in which he spirited away Persephone. Hades, King of the Underworld, rarely visited the Upperworld, but he fell in love with Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of Agriculture. Hades kidnapped Persephone and took her back down to the Underworld. Two other gods went down after Persephone, but had to be rescued by Hercules. Demeter, upset and greiving for her daughter, would let nothing grow, and a drought grew over the lands. Zeus became angry at this and ordered Hades to bring Persephone back. Hades agreed under the condition that Persephone had not eaten anything. Unfortunately, Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds. Hades refused to let Persephone go. Finally, he returned Persephone, as long as she returned to him every year for part of the year. Demeter allows nothing to grow in those four months, and so the world becomes dark and cold.
