The Mummy Case of Paankehamen
Egyptian Ca. 945-715 B.C.
The mummy case is composed of a substance known as cartonnage, which is
linen or papyrus strips that have been bound together with a gummy
substance in order to form a flexible shell.
The case is covered with paints that were made up of mineral and
vegetable substances. The paints were applied with a reed brush.
The face on the mummy case is not of the dead man, but is a generalized
human face.
Images on the mummy case reflected events which Paankhenamun hoped would
carry him into the afterlife.
Gods depicted on the case include Horus, Osiris, Isis and Nephytes.
