The Kuba Mukenga Mask
Zaire, Late 19th Century
The Mukenga mask was important to the Kuba people. It was worn in
ceremonies only by the king of the Kuba. It represents the Kuba ancestor
and culture-hero, Woot.
The Kuba people consider themselves the children of Woot. He is also
believed to be the creator of the world.
Woot is also believed to be the original king-leader and founder of the
Kuba aristocratic lineage.
The mask is covered with leopard skin, the ruff of a Colobus monkey, and
red parrot feathers. The eyes represent the a chamelleon and the trunk
representst the power of the elephant.
