Saint George Killing the Dragon
Bernardo Martorell 1400-1452
St. George was painted on a piece of wood from a now-disassembled altar
piece devoted to this saint.
The artist, Bernardo Martorell, claimed St. George as his patron saint.
The scene is taken from The Golden Legend, a collection of short stories
about the lives of saints.
In Saint George's story, he protects the daughter of a king who is to be
sacrificed to the dragon.
Both the princess's red dress and the white ram are symbolic of
sacrifice.
Stucco on the canvas was used to emphasize the halo, crown, horse gear,
sword, and lance.
