Masons and tile setters prepare and lay brick, stone and tile in addition to interpreting plans, taking measurements and laying out work. As a mason you would probably work in commercial, institutional or housing construction. Masons often work on a project-by-project basis. Much time is spent outdoors and reasonably good physical condition is needed because these jobs involve lifting heavy objects and working in a stooped position.
WHAT YOU NEED:
While masonry can be learned informally on the job, completeing an apprenticeship program will improve your employment prospects. Apprenticeship programs are usually three to four years in durations and have a minimum education requirement. To be a mason you must have the ability to make accurate calculations and should have good hand-to-eye coordination and good spatial perception.
