ELEMENTARY/HIGHSCHOOL TEACHERS

Teachers, usually highschool teachers, are trained specialists in such varied subjects as mathematics, sciences, industrial arts and languages, but are still often required to teach outside their particular area. Besides classroom teaching, teachers spend time researching their subjects and preparing background material for lessons. As a teacher, you are expected to supervise extra-curricular activities and sometimes work evenings or weekends meeting with parents and preparing student evaluations. To balance the sometimes long hours of the school year, you would have a longer summer vacation than most other occupations. To be a teacher, you must be genuinely interested in young people and want to help them learn.

A Bachelor of Education is generally required for this profession, often after you have an undergraduate degree. To teach in the public school system, you need certification; these certificates are not valid right across Canada and the United States, although most place have reciprocal arrangements to recognize each other's certification.
