Physicians and surgeons treat people for illness and injury. Thy examine patients, determine medical histories and establish diagnoses; adminster drugs, medical or surgical treatment; and authorize birth birth and death certificates. As a amedical doctor you would also assist in health education and preventing illness and counsel patients on maintaining good health. General practitioners deal with a wide variety of illnesses or injuries and assume long-term care of their patients. If necessary, they refer their patients to specialists. Specialists can choose to practise in specific areas in medicine, surgery or laboratory medicine for which they are qualified.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Most undergraduate medical programs last four years. To be accepted, you may have a complete two to four years in science at the university level, and score high on the Medical College Admission Test. After medical school, you would begin an intense period of training in hospitals and clinics which lasts between two and five years depending on your field of medicine and you specialization. Licensing is required to practice and is usually obtained after a formal training period.
