As a civil engineer you would design and supervise the construction of buildings and other structures. You might specialize in structural design, construction, transportaiton, road and highway, environmental, waste management or municipal engineering. Civil engineers determine the strength and other qualities of the structures they design. They develop the specifications and procedures to be followed during construction. You would work with clients, architects and construction supervisors regarding the project requirements. For the most part, civil engineers work in offices but may spend some time at construction sites. You may also be called upon to work long hours during the course of a major project.
WHAT YOU NEED:
To enter this profession you should have a university degree in civil engineering. With a degree and two years of experience you may register with a provincial engineering association as a professional engineer. Registration is required in many jobs by law.
