Janus was the god in Roman mythology that had two faces that looking in opposite directions, one in the past and one in the future. The month of January is named for him. Janus means "gate".

Myth

Romans prayed to Janus during war. They also called on him at the beginning of every prayer, even before Jupiter (Zeus is Greek).
