Hermes (Mercury) was the messenger god. He was the protector of travelers and supposedly brought good luck. He guided the souls of the dead to Hades. He had winged shoes and a winged hat.

On the day of his birth, Hermes stole Apollo's cattle. Later Hermes and Apollo became friends. Because of their friendship Hermes invented the seven stringed lyre for Apollo who loved music.
