The Furies were
terrible goddesses in Roman mythology. Their names were Alecto,
Tisiphone, and Magaera. They had snakes in their hair and they
carried whips.

The Furies punished
people for the crimes they had committed, especially to anyone
who had killed a family member. Oresta had killed his mother Clytemnestra.
For this crime, the Furies drove Oresta insane.
