The Pueblo I Time Period

700 AD - 900 AD

The puebloans began using above-ground dwellings called pueblos. These buildings were built to hold many people and several families. The buildings were circled around pit houses. The pit houses were now used as social, religious, and educational centers known as kivas. Domestic cotton was introduced from Mexico and used for blankets, clothing, furs and feathers. In this time period, pottery drastically improved and developed. During this time period, the Anasazi Indians expanded their territory into central Utah and into Mexico. Cotton and corn were grown and pottery became a major art. The Anasazi also used underground Kivas for culture and religious centers.
