Puebloan (People) - People of NE Arizona and NW New Mexico, commonly dwell in Pueblos

Pueblo - multi-leveled, multi-family house constructed of stone and/or adobe; ladders are used to get from one level to the next

Anasazi - ([an-a-sa-zee] Ancient Ones) Early Puebloan Ancestors

Maize - see corn

Corn - Chief crop and staple of many early Indians

Kiva - (kee-va) An underground structure originally used to store food then used as a dwelling place; Most recent use is as a religious, meeting, and cultural center.

Havasupai - ([ha-va-su-pie] People-of-the-Blugreen-Water) Tribe of Northwestern Arizona; reservation borders Grand Canyon National Park

Yuma - People of southern Arizonian and Californian deserts; also language family

Supai - (su-pie) Village on Havasupai Indian Reservation; located within the Grand Canyon and accessible only by trail or helicopter

Havasu Falls - Waterfalls on Havasupai Indian Reservation; bluish- green water hence the name Havasupai (People-of-the-Blue green- Water)

Hualapai - ([wa-la-pie] People-of-the-Red brown-Earth) Indian tribe of Northwestern Arizona

Yavapai - ([ya-va-pie] People-of-the-Sun) Indian tribe of Central Arizona; divided into three smaller bands: Wipukapaya (People-of-the- Redrocks), Tolkepaya (People-of-the-Scrub-Rock), Kwevikopaya (People-of-the-Elsewhere)

Navajo - (Na-va-hoe) Immigrants from NW Canada; settled in NE Arizona

Mojave - (Moe-ha-vee) Native peoples of Southern Colorado River area

Colorado River - Major river flowing through Northern and Western Arizona

Spain - Country from which missionaries and soldiers were sent to conquer the SW and convert its people to Catholicism

Missions - Spanish "forts" used to instruct the Indians on European culture and religion

Pope - (Poh-pay) Puebloan medicine man who led a successful rebellion against the Spanish; Rebellion called Pope's Rebellion

Hohokam - Ancient Indians of S.Central Arizona; ancestors of Pima and Tohono O'Odham

Hopi - Puebloan tribe of NE Arizona

Zuni - Puebloan tribe of NW New Mexico

Sinagua - (Sp. "Without Water") Ancient Indians of N.Central Arizona

Pima - Modern tribe of S.Central Arizona

Tohono - Modern tribe of S. Central Arizona; also called Papago

Archaic - the first in a line of several time periods that construct a history of the Puebloans

Dog - Domesticated animal of early Puebloans

Atl-atl - device used to throw spears

Obsidian - Black, glass like rock used to make arrow and spearheads

Flintnapping - the method used to craft arrow and spearheads

Basketmaker - Second time period in Puebloan chronology; named for intricate baskets of the time

Juniper - A tree used to make ancient dwellings

Piņon - a tree used in ancient dwellings

Adobe - A mud-like substance used in the building of pueblos.

Gathering - Foraging; the method used by early indians to collect wild plants, etc.

Turkey - A domesticated animal of the Basketmaker time period; feathers were used for blankets, etc.

Pottery - storage or artistic vessels formed out of clay

Nomad - One who does not live in a fixed place but wanders to find the best available food and water supplies

Mesa - (Sp. "Table") A tall plateau that is higher than the surrounding landscape and is atop steep cliffs
