Basket Making
Baskets were used as bowls, cooking vessels, jars and even as a way to carry water.
The Basketmakers commonly used four different types of plants to weave the baskets with: Thick reeds
were used to create the underlying structure, while willow twigs or yucca plants were used to bind the
reeds together. The black designs on the basket were made with martynia (devil's claw), a plant
with very long needles.
The plants were woven together using the coil method, building up a spiral of woven plants to form
the shape of the basket. This allowed for an extremely tight weave that could hold water.
