The Basketmaker III Time Period
600 AD - 700 AD
The Basketmaker III or Modified Basketmaker peoples lived much like
the people of the Basketmaker II time period. The Anasazi from this
time, though, began making pottery between AD 600 - AD 700. By the
time that Basketmaker period was over, the Anasazi were quite good
potters. They also began building houses out of stone sealed with
adobe. These houses, called pueblos, were built on the edges of mesas
or in depressions in high cliff walls. Some of their pueblos were as
many as five stories tall! Building their houses this way was very
good for defense. If an enemy could climb the cliffs and get close to
the pueblos, the Anasazi just had to take down the ladders between the
pueblo's levels.
