The Basketmaker I Time Period
100 BC - 500 AD
Basketmaker I- The Anasazi (Puebloan Ancestors) lived in during this
time period. By this time, the Anasazi had began to use farming techniques.
They knew how to farm, but did not have very many crops. The only vegetables
they knew how to farm were squash and maize. Maize was a type of Native American
corn. The word "Anasazi" is from a Navajo word meaning "ancient ancestors", or
"enemy ancestors". By this time, they began to live in caves and small
rock shelters. They had now domesticated dogs as well as turkeys in this period.
They used the dog for both a pet and watchdog. They used the turkey for food
and blankets. They were called Basketmakers because of their intricate baskets
used for holding food, and other objects. They baskets that the Anasazi made were
so tight, they could even hold water!
